Denounce the pollution particles and nitrogen dioxide capital Murcia (02/02/2015)

Ecologists in Action has filed a complaint with the General Directorate of Environment and Environmental Health Service of the Ministry exceedances of particulate pollutants during the month of January, according to official data from the Directorate General.

During this January, there have been eight days exceedances of particulate matter PM10 in the measuring station San Basilio (Murcia West) limit value established by the regulations set at 50 micrograms per cubic meter (mg / m³).

State law sets a maximum of 35 days exceedances per year.

Ecologists in Action has stated in the complaint that also have not provided data of these particles for 14 days this January.

If they had taken these daily measures likely to increase even more the days with pollution above the maximum permitted levels.

This lack of information breaches the Royal Decree 102/2011, of 28 January on improving air quality, Law 27/2006 of 18 July, by which regulates access rights to information , public participation and access to justice in environmental matters and the Aarhus Convention.

PM10 pollutant particles are produced by road traffic, industrial emissions, and are one of the most significant for its serious conditions the respiratory system and lungs environmental pollution problems.

PM10 is one of the agents of many respiratory diseases, asthma, aggravation of allergic conditions and cardiovascular problems.

Research on long-term effects have estimated that exposure to particulate matter may reduce life expectancy from several months to two years.

Moreover, in the same station San Basilio (Murcia West) there have been episodes of contamination by nitrogen dioxide (NO2) 245 mg / m³ per cubic meter on 7 21 hours and 201 mg / m³ day 14 at 20h (time limit value being 200 g / m³).

State law sets a limit of 18 times a year.

This type of pollution is also directly linked to traffic.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is capable of promoting inflammatory reactions in the lung NO2 affects the deeper sections of the lungs, inhibiting some features thereof, as the immune response and producing a decrease in resistance to infection.

Children and asthmatics are most affected by exposure to high concentrations of nitrogen dioxide.

In 2014, the measuring station San Basilio has exceeded the annual limit value of 40 ug / m3 for the second consecutive year.

To this we must add other episodes of benzene contamination in the measuring station Murcia-Sewell.

The first of these episodes occurred last Wednesday, January 28, 9 mg / m³ 8 hours.

The second episode was recorded on January 31 with 8'3 g / m³ at 8 hours (the annual average limit value is set to 5 ug / m³).

Toluene levels have also shot with peaks of 95'9 g / m³ on the 30th, according to data from the Directorate General of Environment.

Long-term exposure to benzene can cause hematologic, immunologic and central nervous system damage.

The World Health Organization has classified benzene as a potential carcinogen, even at very low doses.

Toluene toxicity can affect the nervous system.

Low or moderate levels can cause fatigue, confusion, weakness and nausea.

This environmental organization recalls that the Office of Environment has opened an investigation into pollution episodes that last year forced the evacuation of the IES Sanje, closest to the factories of Chemical Pole Sewer school.

Ecologists in Action and Clean Air Platform are themselves known as private prosecutor is investigating prosecutor.

Ecologists in Action criticizes the lack of preventive and precautionary measures on road traffic and demands greater control and periodic inspections on emissions from industrial sites.

To this organization the urgent completion and implementation of the Quality Plan to Improve Air Quality whose draft takes elaborándose since January 2013 is required.

Also considers it essential, in addition to the prevention and control of pollution, which campaigns and will promote public awareness and education campaigns, in relation to the problem of deteriorating air quality and its impact on the environment environment and health of the population.
