Terra Natura Murcia celebrates the birth in captivity of three ostriches on site (27/08/2012)

The nature and animal park Terra Natura Murcia has three new tenants.

The resort has hosted for the first time the birth of three cubs captive ostrich (Struthio camelus) in their facilities.

Currently, caregivers are unable to determine the sex of the three chicks, and that until they change their plumage from their second year of life will not be possible to confirm this.

The three chicks walking now one of the campuses, located in the subject area of ​​the African savannah with an adult female to take it as reference and learn to adapt to the environment.

Small birth ostriches measured about 25 centimeters tall.

Each month will grow another 25 centimeters to over two meters in height as adults.

The birth of these chicks has been possible after breaking the shell of their eggs weighing more than a kilo, and whose size is equivalent to about 30 chicken eggs.

Experts have begun to park small ostriches feed with a mixture of feed specially made with crushed corn, chopped fruit and vegetables.

Ostriches are the largest birds in the world and over its evolution have lost the ability to fly.

Underdeveloped possessing wings is offset by the great muscular development of the legs, which allow them to reach high speeds and to defend against possible attacks from predators.

Its longevity is around 40 years.
