The City continues to investigate the outbreak of salmonella poisoning to prevent the reoccurrence of similar situations (22/08/2012)

The Councillor for Social Welfare and Health, María del Carmen Pelegrin and Councilman Markets, Consumption and Decentralization, Christopher Smith, met this morning with both technical councils and local police and the Consul of Ecuador Cecilia Erique to address spontaneous meetings on the esplanade of the FICA and other areas and implement control measures to prevent foodborne illness like that occurred on Wednesday August 15.

On Thursday August 16 Health Center of San Andres told the City Council the existence of an outbreak of salmonellosis in the town and immediately began working to detect focus.

As already known after epidemiological studies by the Department, at the meeting in the FICA spontaneous person kebabs sold homemade mayonnaise accompanied shabby.

Therefore, different people came to health centers because they suffered fever, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea.

For the incubation period and symptoms sensed that the salmonella bacteria was responsible, something that was confirmed by the results of the stool.

As they became aware of what happened, the City established as an urgent and through local police and consumption, extensive surveillance in the area to prevent continued selling the product concerned.

After locating the alleged seller at the data provided by the intoxicated, the local police is now trying to find to complete the investigation and to initiate proceedings to determine what happened.

At this meeting it was agreed to establish a permanent monitoring plan and thorough in these concentrations and, as had been the case so far, preventing the illegal sale of food products.

It was also agreed to ask the Consulate of Ecuador to seek their assistance in tackling this problem.

Thus, we ask you to conduct these meetings to ask permission of Public Roads Service to always know your situation so you can control this illegal sale.

Also been asked to bring to the attention of the City which are the points of contact of these families in different parts of the municipality.

Finally they were asked to indicate their compatriots that they should not eat unfamiliar products originate and to inform sellers if they want to continue carrying out this activity should seek all regulatory permits.

Both the local police and the Consumer Service are making checks on these spontaneous meetings since 2003.

From then until now have brought twenty penalties for the illegal sale of food.
