European experts in Murcia studying how to increase the safety of pedestrians and cyclists in the street (01/03/2012)

The city leads the project MOBISEC that over the next 3 years will work on improving signage and measures to promote intermodal mobility

The future of the bicycle as a regular means of transport in cities is to be determined largely in Murcia, which has been selected by the European Union to lead the project MOBISEC, which will run over the next 3 years.

During this time, specialists and European experts in mobility work on this project with the view toward how to improve the safety of cyclists and pedestrians on public roads, especially in the bike lanes and roundabouts.

Meetings have started this morning with the assistance of the Mayor, Miguel Angel House, and the project manager at the Directorate General for Mobility and Transport of the European Commission, Antonio Scala, in addition to the council-manager Javier Iniesta management project, and José María Tortosa, responsible for the areas of Traffic and Transport and European Programmes, respectively.

Also invited to the opening cycling associations, universities, professional associations, neighborhood associations and environmentalists, among other groups.

In addition to Murcia, which is responsible for leading the program also involved in the project MOBISEC (Mobility Initiatives for Sustainable European Communities) Cities in Oldham (United Kingdom) and Varna (Bulgaria).

While the main objective is to increase road safety for pedestrians and cyclists, the two main actions are aimed at improving the signage or separation of areas reserved for pedestrians and cyclists and improved bicycle parking areas to encourage intermodal mobility.

The program will focus its actions to achieve four previous proposals:

- Promotion of cycling as a regular urban transport

- Ensure the safety of road users, particularly cyclists and pedestrians

- Promotion of intermodal urban mobility between the bicycle and other transportation

- Citizen participation: education programs for all ages and actions to promote citizen engagement in the project

To advance these objectives, technical measures and analyze the possibilities, since the installation of vertical signs, barriers of separation, the study on safety in road crossings or bicycle activities to promote intermodality.

All these actions are included in the Bicycle Master Plan of the municipality of Murcia executed by the Municipal Office of the Bicycle.

Also during the next 36 months the project MOBISEC analyze the development of innovative intelligent system for the design of the urban network of cycle paths and ciclocalles and dissemination activities, awareness and participation.

As the program develops, Murcia is the city responsible for its management, from planning agendas to coordinate work plans, monitoring the project or the completion of monitoring reports.
