The Mayor detailed in Brussels Murcia driven measures to improve energy efficiency (29/11/2011)

In his address to the Smart Cities Forum held this morning at Parliament

The success of sustainable energy policies and the fight against climate change worldwide up to the cities, where it consumes 80% of energy.

Therefore, local authorities have a key role in improving the sustainability of cities to be planners, regulators and promoters of development.

This has been the focus of the presentation by the Mayor in the Smart Cities Forum for Energy Efficiency, held this morning at the European Parliament, where House has intervened to explain the experience of Murcia in this area.

Historically the City of Murcia has been very aware of the environment, keeping the head of environmental policy in Spain and Europe.

The result of this, many agreements have been signed among them the Covenant of Aalborg, the creation of the Local Agency for Energy and Climate Change in Murcia or the Covenant of Mayors.

Precisely the Covenant of Mayors has been and is the commitment that has taken the city of Murcia to help the fight against climate change and the use of new technologies for energy production.

Through the development of Energy Action Plan, already running, Murcia will help to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions by 20%.

Another aim is to achieve an additional 20% by planting trees as carbon sinks in natural environments and new gardens.

Some key actions in this plan are directed towards the extension of public transport, especially the tram towards the adoption of renewable energies such as photovoltaic and demand measures to bioclimatic housing and energy efficiency in public lighting.

In total, they have already implemented more than 45 measures of this plan that have achieved significant energy savings and emissions of greenhouse gases.

Some of these measures already implemented are related to efficiency in public lighting and traffic lights, and the implementation of renewable energy.

It has also encouraged the use of bicycles and public transport through the implementation of the tram and use of surplus energy products plants and waste water treatment and biogas.

Murcia, key in the future

Murcia is taking an active role in some key issues in the future of the energy efficiency of cities.

The first is the introduction of the new bioclimatic urban development and the implementation of the "information society" and its technology for energy efficiency in cities, with the promotion of renewable energy from homes or user support in city traffic.

Among municipal actions in solar photovoltaics House has undertaken included the installation of solar pergolas in parks and streets, the network of bus shelters with solar powered photovoltaic alone or in all points of payment for public parking area (ORA), plus installation on the roofs of more than 40 municipal buildings.

Finally, the City brought to contest the installation of solar thermal power plants and photovoltaic land under concession demaniales in local environmental improvement, which allow you to install 22.5 megawatts in over 100 hectares.

The connection to the Internet from free public access stations and through an extensive network of 145 WiFi antennas or installation of a surveillance network of gardens, two other examples have been mentioned by the Mayor in his speech today at the European Parliament.

An exhibition that also included the reference to actions to promote biofuels made by the municipality or the development of integrated management software services of the Municipal Office of the Bicycle, pioneering the creation of a network of bicycle locks for bicycle parking or web systems for the recovery of stolen bicycles or to connect to people who exchange bikes.
