Congresses left in Murcia EUR 36.2 million (21/07/2011)

According to the study presented by the Convention Bureau of the Department of Tourism in 2010 attended by around 30,000 people to events held in the municipality

This year the municipality of Murcia is consolidated as a town conferences and meetings, as though it has experienced a small decline in the number of conferences, events and meetings, have been more crowded than in 2009, voter turnout was around 30,000 people.

Councillor for Tourism, Miguel Cascales, Manager of the Convention Bureau of the City of Murcia, Ramón Palazón, and the President of the partners of the Convention Bureau, Jesus Pacheco, this morning presented data at conferences and meetings Murcia last year.

According to the analysis, from 2007 began a decline in the number of meetings caused by the crisis and the decline in spending by congress and their stay in the city.

The economic impact in 2010 was 1.8 million euros less than in 2009.

Still, the decline in revenue last year is not significant because there has been a slowdown in poor performance since 2007, the year the economic crisis began.

However, in 2010 registered the highest turnout of the last five years.

1128 During 2010 meetings were held in the municipality, with a total of 174,046 attendees, a considerable increase in the number of participants considering that in 2009 more meetings were held (1,194) with an attendance of 145,924 people.

Last year fewer events were held in 2009 but more crowded, a sign that Murcia has established itself as a congress city.

As for the origin of the participants, 122,329 people (70%) were in the region; 48,357 participants (28%) and 3,360 national (2%) standards.

November, May, March and October are the months that more meetings were held.

Of the 1,128 meetings held in 2010, 81 were conferences, with an average participation of 252 people-, 122-company arrangements with an average of 102 participants, and 925 workshops and seminars - with an average of 153 participants each.

Most of these events have been proposed by the private sector (60% versus 40% of public initiative), highlighting economic and trade sector (41% of meetings), cultural (17%) and health.

Among the major events held in 2010 are the National Congress of Emergency (1,500 participants), VII National Congress of Community Nursing and Primary Care (700 attendees), XVIII National Congress of Geriatrics and Gerontology (400 participants), XXVI National Congress Human Genetics (300 participants) and the Congress of Occupational Health and Safety (200 attendees).

For the next year are expected major conferences such as the Spanish Society for Quality in Health Care, with 800 people, and the National Conference of Preventive Medicine, attended by 150 delegates.

The average expenditure per congressman and day ranges from 228 euros for people who stay in four star hotels, and 203 euros for people who stay in hotels of three stars.

Spending in 2009 ranged 268 and 177 euros.

This expenditure includes the registration fee, accommodation, meals and other extras like internal transport, the consumption of culture and leisure and shopping.
