The Campus Mare Nostrum work with the European University Institute to enhance its role in the Mediterranean (03/05/2011)

The rectors of the Polytechnic University of Murcia and Cartagena, José Antonio Cobacho and Felix Faure, respectively, today signed a strategic alliance with the European University Institute president, Josep Borrell, to develop projects in the Mediterranean area, the primary objective of Campus Mare Nostrum excellence that promote both public universities in the region.

José Borrell, who also gave a lecture at the Faculty of Law at the University of Murcia on the euro and the future of the EU, welcomed the signing of the universities in the region by "becoming the Spanish university with a projection in Mediterranean, given the economic, social and political is this area for Spain. "

The agreement with the European University Institute, an institution created in 1972 in Florence by the founding countries of the European Community and which is specialized in research and graduate studies, will enable future collaboration in the exchange of graduate students and in the field of the problems affecting the Mediterranean, such as water and multiculturalism, as evidenced in the signing ceremony, held in the building of convalescence, home of the Rector of the University of Murcia.

Borrell suggested as a possible collaboration, the university meetings organized by the Institute with representatives from Mediterranean countries, which annually take place in Florence, can be held alternately in Murcia and Italy.

Also, the president of the Institute referred to the opportunity to present in the Region of Murcia the study that the institution he leads has been developed on water-view of the "sensitivity of this land with this resource," he said, and referred to Masters trasmediterráneas relations as one of the future areas of collaboration with the Campus Mare Nostrum.

Asked by journalists, Borrell defined water as a scarce source of conflict and spoke of the need to establish management and rational use of this element.

He also spoke of the riots that occurred in North Africa, adopting a critical stance to the role played by Europe, "calling for democracy with a small mouth, but we want stability above all" and warned that these countries need investment now, and financial support rather than high-sounding statements, because "if they sink into economic stagnation, he said the Arab spring will come to nothing."

The Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Murcia and coordination of the Campus Mare Nostrum, Juan María Vázquez, spoke of the new doors and perspectives that the agreement with a prestigious center of the European University Institute open for Mare Nostrum Campus project and their commitment the Mediterranean Sea.

Faura Rector also pointed to the reputation of the Institute headed by José Borrell, offering the most extensive program of postdoctoral fellowships in Europe, besides keeping the historical archives of the EU and host of the Robert Schuman Institute.

For his part, José Antonio Cobacho said the honor for the University of Murcia is the visit of Jose Borrell and glossed his career, which has held, among other charges, the president of the European Parliament and the Minister of Public Works , Transport and Environment in governments of Felipe González.

Borrell was accompanied on his visit to Murcia by Luis Delgado, deputy director general of the Ministry of Education, who recalled in his speech the geostrategic importance of the Mediterranean area for the policy of internationalization of Spanish universities.
