The council organizes schools of patients in the centers of the municipality to promote change in eating habits (02/12/2010)

The third workshop is conducted in the Civic Center neighborhood of El Carmen

To act more efficiently on the risk factors of obesity, efforts have been coordinated technical, scientific and economic aspects of health services of the Municipality of Murcia, the Nutrition Unit of the Reina Sofía Hospital and Foundation Health Education & Research Schools create Patients linked to the Area Health Centres VII.

The third workshop of the School of patients in diet and physical activity, derived by Carmen Health Center, is developing this morning, from 9:30 to 11:30 am at the offices of the Municipal Center, located at the Mall Capuchins.

These schools can turn people Patients referred by doctors in their health centers.

Consist of three sessions in a Municipal Community Center neighborhood or hamlet, where they provide knowledge, motivation and tools to facilitate effective change in their pattern of eating and physical activity.

Patients also have a service telephone and web expert.

The program aims to provide a tool Centres Community Health to continue the primary care tips to prevent excess weight through nutrition education and encouraging physical activity, combining the resources of primary care, health care and public.

Obesity is a global epidemic of severe health consequences.

The prevention of this health problem, has become one of the main priorities in the field of public health.

The scientific evidence places the overweight and obesity in the causal chain of several chronic diseases (cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, etc..) Whose prevalence also is increasing rapidly in developed countries, where already the leading cause of death and disabilities.

WHO in 2002 identified ten risk factors for noncommunicable diseases that cause increased morbidity in the world, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Of those ten factors, five are directly related to nutrition and physical activity, obesity, physical inactivity, hypertension, high cholesterol levels and low consumption of fruits and vegetables.

Prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in Murcia:

- Overweight: is associated with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, certain tumors, degenerative bone processes.

In Murcia, nearly 60% of those over 18 have some degree of overweight (5 points above the national average).

Of these, almost 20% are obese.

- Diabetes Mellitus Type 2: 11% of Murcia's are diagnosed

- High blood pressure, affects 24% of the population and only 15% are adequately controlled.

- Hypercholesterolemia: 51% of the population has high cholesterol levels

- Sedentary: 40% of adults are sedentary in their leisure time.
