Now Murcia proposes the installation of vending machines in which neighbors recycle their packaging in exchange for vouchers (20/04/2018)

- Angeles Micol explains that the vouchers obtained by citizens for their packaging can be used in their purchases in establishments attached to the system.

"Therefore, in addition to the priority objective of recycling, traditional local trade is encouraged"

- The municipal formation will defend a motion with this proposal in the next Plenary

NOW MURCIA proposes that the City Council install vending machines in certain parts of the municipality in which residents can recycle their plastic and aluminum containers in exchange for discount vouchers.

The councilor Angeles Micol explains that it is a complementary initiative to the system of selective collection of waste implemented in Spain, managed by Ecoembes, and whose main objective is to increase recycling rates, thanks to the incentive for citizens to receive in return These vouchers.

The system proposed by Murcia Now, which will be presented in a motion at the next plenary session, proposes to start the operation with two or three machines in places in the city such as food markets, and that the vouchers obtained by citizens for their packaging can be used. use in their purchases in establishments attached to the system.

"Therefore, in addition to the priority objective of recycling," he explains, "traditional local commerce is encouraged".

Micol affirms that this 'reverse vending' machine system has been successfully implemented in a large part of Europe (Germany, United Kingdom, Belgium, etc.) and in other countries such as the USA, Canada or Japan, as well as in several Spanish municipalities , among them Fuente Álamo.

The system works, specifically, like this: the container to be recycled is introduced into the machine, which is capable of reading the bar code of the container and of comparing that data with the shape, volume and even the weight thereof.

Once the package has been accepted, it returns the aforementioned discount voucher to be used in the stores that are members of the system.

Those responsible for arranging the system are responsible, each week, to remove the recycling material accumulated by the system -which the owner of the machine must store in a suitable place-, buying it with a benefit that is fixed in advance.

The motion of Ahora Murcia raises the creation of a commission for the study and planning of the project, which must have representation of the political groups and the associations of merchants and markets of supplies.

In the commission it will be decided which model of implantation of the vending machines would be more favorable for our municipality: the one of purchase of the machines on the part of the City council or the one of assignment of municipal spaces.

Micol recalls that recycling rates in Spain are much lower than in other EU countries, in addition to everything points to Spain will not meet the objectives set by the EU in terms of municipal waste recycling: 55% by 2025 and 65 % by 2035. "Therefore," he says, "the proposals that get more people to join in the task of recycling are especially important, and the initiative that we will present in the Plenary is precisely in that line, in addition to that of encourage traditional local commerce.
