The City of Murcia will promote pedestrian mobility in the municipality after the unanimous agreement of the Plenary approving a motion of Now Murcia.

The motion establishes the accession of Murcia to the Network of Walking Cities, an international association open to municipalities and administrations interested in improving the situation of pedestrians through the implementation and exchange of initiatives aimed at improving universal accessibility, security road and the environment.

Now Murcia spokeswoman, Alicia Morales, indicates that belonging to this network will allow our municipality to contact others "such as Vitoria or Pontevedra who are an example in the development of the culture of walking, and share experiences with them."

The councilor affirms that "this accession is going to be an opportunity for Murcia to carry out a global program to promote pedestrian mobility, adopting specific measures on safe school roads, the planning of pedestrian routes in neighborhoods and districts, the greater integration of Huerta -city, the development of green paths and the creation of routes with safe sidewalks that connect the districts with each other and with the city of Murcia ".

"A whole series of measures," Morales explains, "that go in the direction of achieving a city with better mobility, more sustainable, healthier and more friendly, a city model that is one of the hallmarks of Ahora Murcia" .

The mayor says that now the municipal government "has to take seriously the commitment that will acquire the City to be part of this network and implement appropriate actions, involving the opposition groups."

The Walking Cities Network is based on two documents, the Pedestrian Rights Charter and the International Walking Charter, and recalls that "we are all pedestrians" and that mobility "contributes directly to improving the social cohesion of municipalities as well as equal opportunities in the use and enjoyment of public space ".

The councilor notes that "the climate of our municipality and the geographical reality of the Murcia valley are conducive to promoting pedestrian mobility and generate spaces for walking, increasing safety for citizens who move on foot, as well as to promote intermodality with the bicycle and with public and private transport ".

"In Murcia now we believe, as we have been saying," Morales says, "that the future is to build cities that pacify traffic and truly commit to sustainable and comprehensive mobility, which put in place effective measures against noise and noise pollution. air and promote the health of our neighbors.
