Social Rights reinforces its commitment to guarantee the welfare of the elderly in the municipality with the Volunteer Project, musical activities, workshops and trips (14/03/2018)

The Councilor for Social Rights and Development Cooperation of the City of Murcia, Conchita Ruiz, visited this morning the Senior Centers of El Esparragal, Santa Cruz, San Jose de la Vega, Ermita del Rosario and Santiago el Mayor.

A visit in which he has accompanied the users in the development of their activities, but has also served to meet with the boards of directors of the same.

During the course of the day Conchita Ruiz has taken stock of the dedication that the City of Murcia makes with the largest municipality.

In terms of courses, Social Rights allocates more than 160,000 euros for training in Social Centers for the Elderly.

A figure that has been increasing progressively in the last three years, given that currently two courses are offered to all the centers according to the demands that they pose.

Among the novelties stand out art therapy, nutrition and healthy eating, personal development: living well to feel better, itinerant workshop of Spanish writers.

To these are added the courses of gerontogimnasia, which during the year 2018 amount to 90 of 70 hours each year, with an amount of 130,000 euros.

But in addition, the majors count on the subscription to two regional newspapers for the 76 Social Centers, that supposes an investment near the sixty thousand Euros.

Travel and cultural activities

Among the scheduled activities include the cultural and environmental trips and routes that are currently in process for the start-up during 2018.

In the area of ​​promotion and cultural participation, the Theater Exhibition will be held on May 29,30 and June 12,13 and will include works by partners from the following Centers:

Senior Social Center of Algezares.

Senior Social Center of Cabezo de Torres.

Senior Social Center of La Alberca.

Senior Social Center of La Cueva.

Senior Social Center of Los Dolores.

Senior Social Center of Llano de Brujas.

Senior Social Center of Monteagudo.

Senior Social Center of Rincón de Seca.

Senior Social Center of San Juan-Santa Eulalia.

Elderly Social Center of San Miguel.

Seniors Social Center of Bacons Bridge.

Senior Social Center of San Pio X.

The world of theater is also the protagonist with the representation of the work "Don Juan Tenorio" by the Cecilio Pineda Company and which houses the Romea Theater in Murcia, through which more than 700 members and partners pass.

It has a budget of 7,500 euros.

Volunteer Project

Undoubtedly one of the biggest bets of the Department of Social Rights and Development Cooperation is the Volunteer Project, whose protagonists and recipients are the Elderly.

That is, the activities to be developed are planned through Volunteers who are partners and partners of the Centers and having as recipients of the voluntary action also the partners of the Centers, promoting the existing human potential, through collaboration of social and cultural actions.

The volunteer project has started its journey with two activities, 'Health in March', a physical-sporting activity of hiking where two volunteers (Juan and Rosi members of the Social Center for the Elderly of the Azarbe) make routes around the area with a group of 18 participants, and the 'Talks and guided visits to the Hydraulic Museum of Los Molinos del Río Segura', an informative activity about the irrigation system and the water resource in the municipality of Murcia through history, with special emphasis on the Molinos del Río Segura, by Pablo Crespo.

Reading clubs

Another of the leisure and cultural activities that are available to the elderly are the functional reading clubs in the centers of La Flota, Vistalegre, S. Antón, S. Andrés - S. Antolín, Bacons Bridge, Los Garres, La Cueva , Cabezo de Torres, La Alberca, S. Miguel and Santiago and Zaraíche.

Some sessions that have the collaboration of the Cultural Association of Murcia and the Foundation of Friends of Reading, and that allows them, one afternoon a week, to read and comment on a previously selected literary work.

Another similar activity is the Literacy Workshops, which work in the Senior Centers of Puente Tocinos, Cabezo de Torres and La Paz.

Global network of cities and communities friendly to the elderly

Finally, we must remember that the City of Murcia approved in plenary session on October 26, 2017 the application to join the World Network of Cities and Communities friendly to the elderly, a project promoted by the World Health Organization and the IMSERSO , designed to create environments and services that promote active and healthy aging.

This project comprehensively addresses the aspects that affect the day to day of our towns and cities and does so by promoting the participation of the elderly, taking into account their needs, perceptions, and opinions throughout the entire process of analysis and improvement of the municipality;

using the methodology and protocols proposed by the WHO to carry it out.
