The iconic building of the School of Art celebrates half a century of life with a tribute to its author, Fernando Garrido (12/03/2018)

The 88-year-old architect expressed his satisfaction for this anniversary and stressed that "the important thing is not the building, but the people, the young people, who are trained here".

This unique property, with an original radial floor, "continues to be a benchmark of useful architecture and, at the same time, beautiful," said José Ballesta.

The building of the Art School of Murcia today celebrated its 50th anniversary with a tribute to its author, the architect Fernando Garrido Rodríguez, 88 years old, in an act that was attended by the mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, and the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, Adela Martínez-Cachá, and the Dean of the College of Architects of the Region, Rafael Pardo Prefasi.

Maestro Garrido expressed his satisfaction for this anniversary and stressed that "the important thing is not the building, but the people, the young people, who are trained here".

This unique property, with an original radial floor, was inaugurated on March 11, 1968 and, since then, it has welcomed the students of the School of Art, which currently totals 291 plus 39 teachers.

José Ballesta wanted to highlight two aspects: "The continent and the content.

It is an iconic building in the city of Murcia that, after 50 years, is still a benchmark, a model of architecture useful and, at the same time, beautiful. "

"On the other hand there is the content: over 50 years here, artists of photography, design, painting, sculpture, etc. have been trained.

At a time in our society where everything seems to be measured in terms of utilitarianism and its economic repercussion, we must emphasize that what has been worked on and reflected here has greatly influenced the deep culture of the people of Murcia, our progress and freedom, thanks to the teachings that have been taught here for 50 years, "added the mayor.

In addition to the tribute to the architect, the School of Art has organized a set of commemorative activities that will be developed throughout the course.
