Less noise and more security after paving the Plaza San Agustín (09/03/2018)

José Ballesta: "For the first time in the city of Murcia this special asphalt has been used to simulate the old existing paving stones, respecting the design and aesthetics of this monumental environment".

In a few days, the Plaza de San Agustín will host thousands of people in one of the most emblematic days of Easter Murcia, as is the morning of Salzillo.

This afternoon the road is opened to traffic with a new stable and safe pavement, which offers a high resistance to heavy traffic, decreasing the noise problems in the access to the Bus Station.

The City Council has completed the paving of the street next to the Plaza de San Agustín, a work that began last February and that involves a significant decrease in noise for neighbors, the suppression of vibrations generated by traffic and greater road safety in this busy environment, which gives access to the bus station.

José Ballesta stressed that "for the first time in the city of Murcia, this special asphalt has been used (printed agglomerate), with a relief that simulates the old existing paving stones, respecting the design and aesthetics of this monumental environment that, in a few days , will welcome thousands of people in one of the most emblematic days of the Holy Week in Murcia, as it is the morning of Good Friday, with the processional procession and the steps of Francisco Salzillo making his exit from the church of Nuestro Padre Jesús ".

The new agglomerate replaces the old cobblestone that had given way and had become uneven due to the use and intense traffic, causing noise and falls problems.

The City Council thus provides a solution to this problem expressed by the residents of the neighborhood, as the new asphalt is stable and safe, offers a high resistance to heavy traffic and requires minimal maintenance.

The mayor visited the street next to the Councilor for Infrastructure, Public Works and Services, Rebeca Pérez, representatives of the ONCE, the Salzillo Museum and residents of the neighborhood.

This morning the lane leading to Ronda Norte was opened to traffic and, this afternoon, starting at 6:00 p.m. and once the horizontal road marking works were completed, the lane going in the direction will be opened to traffic. to the Malecon.

A monumental environment that connects the north and south of the city

This route of connection between the north and south of the city registers a high daily traffic of vehicles and has two lanes: one in the direction of the Malecón garden and another towards Ronda Norte, in addition to a bus stop.

It gives access to the El Buen Pastor school, the administrative building of the ONCE and the bus station.

Along the road there are important monumental buildings, such as the Salzillo Museum, made up of the Church of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno and the reconstructed annex building with the façade of the Riquelme Palace, as well as the Church of San Andrés.

On Holy Thursday, in addition, the Plaza de San Agustín becomes a hive of people with the salves of passion that interpret the Bells of Auroros and the traditional preparation of the palm of the Prayer of the Huerto de Salzillo.

The Plaza was completely renovated by the architect Yago Bonet, who sought a total regeneration of the urban environment, as well as highlighting the representative and ceremonial character of this public space.

The works have involved an investment of 68,244 euros.
