The 'Cuenta Conmigo' program of the UMU manages to reduce school violence by 44% (08/03/2018)

The Applied Psychology Service of the University of Murcia presented on Thursday, March 8, the results corresponding to the 2016/2017 course of the program 'Cuenta Conmigo' for the prevention and eradication of school violence.

Thanks to the intervention of the professionals of the University of Murcia, a 44% decrease in the hostile attitudes of the students has been achieved.

The data, presented at a press conference at the Convalecencia, headquarters of the Rectorate, correspond to the work carried out by the research team in ten schools and institutes in the Region.

The presentation was directed by Francisca Tomás Alonso, Vice Chancellor of Transfer, Entrepreneurship and Employment of the UMU, and José Antonio Ruiz Hernández, Director of the Applied Psychology Service of the UMU, was present. every year the fight against harassment, because unfortunately there are children suffering. "

María del Mar Sánchez Rodríguez, Coordinator of the Observatory for School Coexistence of the CARM has stated that school coexistence is everyone's task, and has listed various programs promoted by the General Directorate that she chairs, always with the objective that the educational community in general is aware of how harmful it is to use school violence in any of its facets, to assume coexistence attitudes and try to minimize impulsive behaviors.

For her part, the Vice-Chancellor Francisca Tomás congratulated the Psychology Service for this important work and the Autonomous Community for their collaboration.

"The University of Murcia said it has the obligation to contribute to social welfare and put all their means and all our knowledge to contribute to the improvement of social relations and the improvement of the training of people."

For his part, José Antonio Ruiz Hernández, Director of the Applied Psychology Service of the University of Murcia has explained what the program consists of, making a tour of some of the most outstanding results of the study.

The 'Cuenta Conmigo' program works at three levels: prevention, early intervention and advanced intervention.

To achieve the results, a training plan for teachers and parents is established so that they can apply their principles from their respective perspectives;

a code of good practices and a decalogue for the coexistence that the educational community must assume is elaborated.

The work with the students also consists in holding weekly sessions in which attitudes towards the use of violence, the self-esteem of the minors, their ability to solve social problems, the control of their impulses and their own behavior;

as well as the vision they have of violence in the couple.

Among the significant aspects that have improved in the centers that have participated in the study include, for example, a reduction of physical aggression by fifty percent.

Pushing, kicking and other types of physical violence have been reduced significantly.

With regard to verbal aggressions, the detected decrease almost reaches 35%;

while the social (teasing, humiliation, isolation, spreading rumors ...) have registered a 45% drop.

The most significant fall in behavior occurs in what are considered as attacks or abuses using new technologies.

In this field researchers have detected a decrease of 83%.
