The Second Plan of Equality of Opportunities affects education and employment as tools to reduce the social gap between men and women (07/03/2018)

The Councilor for Social Rights and Development Cooperation of the City of Murcia, Conchita Ruiz Caballero, presented this morning the initiatives that have been incorporated during the last months, through the work of the professionals of the council and the sessions of organizations such as the Council and the Commission of Equality, for the elaboration of the II Plan of Equality of Opportunities between Women and Men of the City council of Murcia.

After the development of the I Municipal Plan and the successive annual programs for the planning and design of measures in favor of gender equality in the municipality of Murcia, "we were very clear that we had to reactivate this plan and adapt it to the new demands and needs of society ", Conchita Ruiz highlighted.

The new document, which received the approval of the Governing Board last Friday, has been prepared with the contributions of professionals from the different services through the Technical Commission, and associations that have equality of opportunities among their aims. between genders, the political groups of the municipal corporation and the unions that make up the Council.

The promotion and coordination of work for the preparation of the document have been made from the Department of Social Rights and Development Cooperation.

During the press conference, framed within the week in which International Women's Day is celebrated, Conchita Ruiz has highlighted the main measures, collected in six strategic areas that make up the Second Plan and that include: Gender mainstreaming in municipal policies;

Training and Employment;

Conciliation and Stewardship;

Gender Violence;

Education for Equality;

and Social Participation.

"Moving towards the effective equality of women and men is the responsibility of the whole society, which must be initiated and maintained throughout the life of the people," explained Ruiz, for whom it is necessary to influence such important aspects as education for Equality and the promotion of women in the labor market will "facilitate greater levels of autonomy and greater possibilities to achieve a more egalitarian and just society".

Training module on Gender Equality

Thus, among the specific actions proposed for the promotion of Education for Equality, the implementation of a training module on gender equality aimed at municipal services, organizations and associations that demand it, with which the incorporation of content on gender equality and prevention of violence against women in all training actions carried out by the City of Murcia and entities that request it.

The creation of an Equality Observatory in the municipality is also planned, with which to recognize and disseminate good practices to promote gender equality, as well as the development of equality workshops for young people;

Guided tours of the city with which to offer an "egalitarian vision" on the history of Murcia and health promotion activities from a gender perspective aimed at educational centers.

The Second Plan contemplates and proposes gender equality through employment-oriented training, with specific actions that reinforce information and raise awareness in equality in the employment training programs carried out by the City Council, increasing the employability of women with greater difficulties due to age, origin, ethnicity, gender violence and / or risk of exclusion;

fostering female entrepreneurship and developing actions to train women in solidarity economy and the creation of cooperatives.
