Pedestrians and cyclists conquer the 20,000m2 of the river promenade that will form the backbone of'Murcia Río' (06/03/2018)

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, today presented the new riverwalk that will back the project transformer of the city 'Murcia River', a green route that affects an area of 19,825 m2 that will be used entirely for pedestrian and cyclist use, with areas family of stay and ride and segregated and bidirectional bike lane.

In the presentation were present members of the Social Council of the City, as representatives of the various groups, associations and entities that make up the society of Murcia, as well as councilors José Guillén, Rebeca Pérez and Antonio Navarro.

The itinerary will be established along the left bank of the river, connecting the area of the Manterola gangway with the Alameda del Malecón, on the other side of the highway, through the creation of a promenade that will allow "to look out on the Segura", highlighted José Ballesta, who pointed out that "this space will provide Murcia with a new attraction, opening a park of nature and leisure that will allow Murcia and Murcia look to the river as an element of urban integration and articulation."

The mayor explained that this project has been designed with three fundamental aspects in mind: "First, establish a new connection between the city and La Huerta, through this left margin, in a landscape, environmental and social action.

Second, open new connections between the Malecón and the river.

A new connection will be established parallel to the route of the motorway, in such a way that we will have a circular circuit that from its beginning in the Malecón will allow to cross the whole mota and to return.

To this we will add the two new gardens in which we are currently working, that of the Cuatro Piedras and the Alameda, which are also new connections between the Malecón and the Segura ".

"In third place," said the mayor, "this project is articulated as an element of human and social cohesion, since it involves the creation of a large pedestrian zone, with areas of stay and also a bike path."

The riverwalk project yesterday received the approval of the Governing Board, which is a new impetus to the transformation process of the city in which the City Council works.

Its contracting budget is 3.5 million euros and the project proposes an execution period of one year.

The new walk includes fully urban areas with peri-urban and orchard areas, so its objective will be the vertebration and gradual connection of the city with its agricultural and natural environment.

In this way, there will be an urbanized walk along the river, from Manterola to the back of Murcia-Park and the conservatory, which will give way to a greener and naturalized transition zone on the fluvial front of the current Malecón's dissuasive parking, from which will access the garden areas and the new green spaces of the Alameda del Malecón and the Cuatro Piedras.

Another primary function of this project is to promote the relationship of citizens with the river, opening a new pedestrian promenade that will stand slightly above the river and with a direct view of its channel, as an alternative route to the Malecón.

The connection between these two pedestrian circuits will be articulated by a greenway that will border the current deterrent parking.

A visual protection zone is also created from the Malecón promenade, by means of a green strip parallel to it that recovers the traditional image of a vegetable garden that was taken from the promenade, and that conceals the parking area.

In addition, this action aims to recover the naturalization and accessibility to the river bank, which has been present throughout the history of the city, also creating a platform level with the water that allows the access of machinery of the CHS and the walk along the river.

Part of the current Murcia Parque complex will be conditioned to create a new access from the riverbed.

Platform 'flown' on the channel

From the beginning of the itinerary, in the area of the Manterola walkway, to the back of the conservatory, a walk of urban character will be developed, whose base will project slightly above the river.

It is proposed as a platform that overlooks the Segura, protected by a light rail and where the pedestrian routes, along the river, and for bicycles with segregated bike lanes, on the interior side.

The separation between these two areas, road and pedestrian, is made effective by a small gap that starts at the beginning of the walk and that decreases until it disappears in the final area of this itinerary.

There is also a tree-lined row with poplars, alms or elms, accompanied by shrubs and ornamental Mediterranean plants (laurel, broom, rose, elderberry, brambles, tarays).

Plaza-mirador and areas of stay

At the beginning of the itinerary, an access portico is planned that marks the entrance to the riverwalk.

Later, in the pedestrian zone, living spaces with benches and lighting in streetlights and floors will be enabled.

Approximately one third of the route, a plaza-mirador becomes a rest and meeting area.

Following the route, there is an extension of the width of the walkway at the height of the pool and auditorium of Murcia Park, so that a square is created again where the future footbridge that connects with the Plaza de la Ciencia, on the other shore, will end. from the river.

A vegetable screen between the river and the parking

The garden area is seen as a vegetable screen between the river and the parking lot, with riparian tree species (hackberry, ash, laurel, oak, elm, willow), which will give way to other species of Mediterranean type and orchard, creating parterres separation with the current parking lot with fruit trees (lemon, orange, persimmon, medlars, fig trees, olive mulberries, pomegranates) and a row of palm trees.

All this upper wooded stratum will be accompanied by a second stratum under shrubs with compatible spaces (lavender, laurel, sage, rosemary, myrtle) that will cover the entire vegetated surface.

Among all this plant surface will run the pedestrian and bicycle routes in the direction of the highway, being in the central area of the park with an open space surrounded by a pergola with plant cover and which is the meeting point and main activities of this area .

The routes continue to pass under the bridge of the highway, where it connects with the current bike lane that runs along the left side to the Alameda del Malecón and Alameda de las Cuatro Piedras.

In this area under the bridge of the highway it is proposed to do a rolling down for maintenance machinery of the CHS to a lower platform flush with the river bed.

This lower level will also be accessible pedestrian and will be treated with bush shrub vegetation to naturalize its appearance.

From this naturalized green zone of transition between vegetable garden and city and of visual separation between the channel and the car park, an itinerary perpendicular to the river follows the foot of the slope of the highway until it connects with the Malecón, so that these two rides have a easy communication and remain related to each other creating a "circular" itinerary that allows the indistinct roundtrip by both ways.

The treatment of this road connection will be very simple, with a plantation in a row of large bananas that offer shade and a naturalized pavement, allowing pedestrian and bicycle circulation and the passage of machinery to the river bank.

'Smartisation' for saving water and energy

All the development of the project will have a component of 'smarting', integrating the application of new technologies to sustainability, with an improvement in the use of water and efficient energy consumption through telematic control systems, and information and signaling. the elements and habitats that are proposed, through the use of augmented reality and other innovative applications that allow interacting with the environment.
