The old railway line between Los Ramos and Los Dolores will become a green lung and leisure area for all residents (05/03/2018)

The Governing Board has approved the project, which has a budget of 1.2 million euros, and whose execution is set to become a strategic action for the more than 45,000 inhabitants of the seven districts it covers.

The proposed solution recovers an abandoned railway track, of a length of 8.5 km, as a green itinerary of the Huerta route, with magnificent perspectives of an environment of great landscape qualities.

The old railway line that ran between Los Ramos and Los Dolores will cease to be an abandoned lot and will become a space of 40,000 m2 accessible to all citizens, whether for pedestrians and cyclists or for sports.

The more than 45,000 inhabitants of these districts will be the first beneficiaries, but the project has a strategic nature since its development will mean the creation of a green lung and a large leisure area in this environment.

The initiative that is going to undertake the City Council, through the councils of Infrastructure, Works and Services and Urban Planning, Environment, Water and Vegetable Garden, supposes the possibility of 'having a route of great landscape value that crosses the Huerta de la Costera Sur, connecting the nuclei of the area with each other and with the City of Murcia, with maximum integration into the natural environment, "explained the councilor Rebeca Pérez, who presented the project together with Antonio Navarro, and with the presence of the members of the municipal boards of the districts through which the path passes.

The proposed solution 'recovers an abandoned railway track as a green itinerary of the Huerta route with magnificent perspectives of an environment of great landscape qualities', Navarro stressed.

"It is as if nature regained its presence in the layout," he concluded.

For this transformation to be possible, the City Council, which first agreed with Adif to transfer the land, has approved the project and the specifications for contracting the greenway works in this stretch of 8.5 kilometers in length of the old railway line Madrid-Cartagena, with a budget of 1,249,272 euros and an expected execution period of 9 months.

The itinerary goes through Alquerías, Los Ramos, Torreagüera, Beniaján, San José de la Vega, Los Garres and Los Dolores.

Mesh of green itineraries

'We want - explained Navarro - that it is a naturalized project of recovery of an environment, but without giving up the opportunity to become a tour of this part of the Huerta de Murcia that will connect with other routes, such as the Reguerón, the specks del Rio, or the existing road network, creating a mesh of green itineraries that generates a new mobility that highlights the natural environment and new perspectives of observation and leisure.

The objective of creating a friendly way in the heart of the orchard of the Costera Sur is that this unused and inhospitable space is erected as the heritage of all Murcia, who can enjoy a walk of 5 meters wide, with a treatment natural by means of the plantation of 1,800 trees of autochthonous species along and on both sides of its entire route, which will be widened in certain points to create a rest and recreation area, equipped with urban furniture.

The solution adopted gives the space total accessibility, ease and safety, allowing to promote sustainable mobility and the practice of walking and cycling, activities especially attractive for people with reduced mobility.

Pedestrian recovery of passage through the towns

In its course through the urban area of the districts it crosses, the greenway will allow continuity to spaces, suppressing the barrier that formed the use as a railway, acquiring the status of fully integrated green space and permeable to traffic.

Another peculiarity of the project will be the environmental and landscape integration, since the trees and revegetation of the route are integrated and mimicked with the adjoining garden spaces, without generating a distorting impact on the whole, constituting a privileged observatory of the environment that surrounds it, achieving a remarkable environmental improvement

The greenway will have a changing woodland, without creating alignments 'as if it were a street or an urban walk', creating shadows and plant groups that generate different scenarios with trees from the environment: fig trees, cypresses, pines, almeces, palm trees, aromatic , etc.

New pedestrian crossings

The passage through the population centers is carried out with an adaptation of these zones, making transversal crossings and resolving the differences of slope between both banks.

To this end, most of the unusable upper-pass structures will disappear, creating connections and pedestrian and pedestrian crossings at the points where such connection exists or is most necessary, with special attention, given the importance and affection of the route, by the population of Beniaján.

As a result of all this, an infrastructure of spaces will be created for the enjoyment and meeting of all citizens, where healthy habits can be practiced that improve their well-being and raise their quality of life, as well as promoting neighborhood cohesion and socio-economic dynamism and cultural
