When education is also dissemination (05/03/2018)

The IES Poeta Julián Andúgar (Santomera, Murcia) hosts the exhibition of the LIFE project on the Tetraclinis tree, of the cypress family.

It is part of the informative activities that the Unit of Scientific Culture (UCC) of the University of Murcia (UMU) promotes in primary and secondary educational centers.

The students, in addition to enjoying the exhibition, worked with fact sheets about the content, observed specimens in pots and seeds through magnifying glasses and watched an informative film.

This cultural dynamism of the center is an example that teaching can also be dissemination.

"The students will not remember only the aligned green desks, but an education that did not wither between four walls", describes Laura Serrano journalist of the UCC.

The activities dealt with the European LIFE-Tetraclinis plan, which aims to recover the forests of Cartagena from this conifer species, a priority European habitat.

The repopulation, together with conservation measures and the reduction of threats, promotes citizen awareness and participation through dissemination.

In this sense, the UCC served as liaison between the institute and UMU researchers Felix Carrillo Lopez and Miguel Esteve Selma, responsible and collaborator of the project respectively.

Among the dissemination actions that Carrillo and the LIFE team highlight are volunteering, guided visits, talks at educational centers, conferences of a scientific-technical nature, attendance at conferences or dissemination on the web and social networks.

Specifically, the exhibition was launched through the City of Cartagena, responsible for the creation of teaching materials, and the Sierra Minera Foundation (FSM) and Association of Naturalists of the Southeast (ANSE).

In this way, Ana Robles, professor of the center and promoter of the event, through the page of ANSE had proof of the project and could visit it at the Night of the Researchers of the UMU.

For the teacher it is important to educate the students regarding the care and preservation of the environment.

In this sense, Robles stresses that "when awareness is produced with activities outside the classroom with a methodology and dynamics very different from the usual, you get more interest and motivation."

A coordinated effort with the center's biology department, which contributed to the various activities and attended both the center's students and visitors.

The need to commit the population, in this case young, of the Region is determined by the difficulties facing the survival of these trees.

Along with the fire of 2011, which affected 59% of the total area of these trees, the restoration is facing the competition to recolonize with the Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis), the difficulties of the younger to sprout, overgrazing, logging uncontrolled for ornamental uses and the fragmentation and isolation of populations.

The initiative of the educational center began on December 13 and ended on the 19th with the visit of the elementary schools of the area.

On the other hand, the IES Poeta Julián Andúgar has carried out various similar activities such as the talk of Santiago Campillo on scientific dissemination for high school science students.
