The UMU analyzes the sustainability of 700 technological companies in the Region of Murcia (02/03/2018)

The Software Engineering Research Group of the University of Murcia develops a project to know the sustainability within the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and to know what are the sustainable habits of the technological companies located in the Region of Murcia.

To this end, a survey is launched to more than 700 companies in the sector to draw a picture of the current situation and propose specific improvement actions to make the technological products and services more sustainable.

The main objective of this project, called GINSENG (Green in Software Systems and Software Engineering), focuses on measuring the impact that software has on the environment.

With this, it is intended to contribute to the knowledge of software sustainability proposing methodologies, validated and automated, that help companies to incorporate good practices in their systems.

"The importance of ICTs in the global scenario, business volume and activities, number of companies, workforce, etc., means that this sector is no stranger to the problem." In this sense, it is a duty for Software Engineers to contribute to improve its sustainability ", explains the researcher of the UMU Begoña Moros.

According to Moros, the impact of technology is important from two perspectives: on the one hand, it helps organizations mediate environmental problems through virtual meetings or the dematerialization of activities;

and on the other hand, the responsibility of technology in environmental degradation, for example, due to the amount of energy consumed by engineering processes.

All participants who take the test will receive an institutional diploma for their participation in this initiative and may include an individualized report about their level of environmental awareness at work.

In addition, confidentially, each company can obtain a dossier on its level of sustainability.

With these surveys we want to evaluate the degree of awareness that technological companies have in this regard.

To do this, the test includes questions about current habits in the work environment on issues related to savings and efficient use of resources such as electricity, water or paper;

about recycling, and about other issues related to the use of certain technologies or strategies that can improve sustainability.

In addition, we will analyze the possible factors that can lead ICT employees to have these habits so that we can propose measures to adopt to improve behaviors.

"The measures to be adopted for companies in the region will depend on the type of specific activity that they develop, but the guidelines that can be followed are many: printing only what is necessary, holding virtual meetings and / or teleworking to avoid displacements, proper use of the cooling / heating systems, turn off the monitors, avoid elstand byo or the reuse of work already done "exposes the computer.

This project belongs to the National R + D + i Plan and is co-financed by the European Social Fund and the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness.

In addition to the University of Murcia, through the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Economics, Sustainability and Health Sciences, the project has the support of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia through the Directorate General for the Environment and the General Directorate of Information Technology, Heritage and Telecommunications.
