The works of pedestrianization of Alfonso X el Sabio Avenue will be the first with real-time monitoring through social networks (23/02/2018)

The works will be carried out in different zoned phases in order to cause as little inconvenience as possible.

The works that will convert Alfonso X el Sabio avenue in a road in which the pedestrian will be the protagonist, with new areas of stay, greater vegetation and less noise pollution begin.

Mayor José Ballesta visited the area this morning, on the occasion of the start of the pedestrianization works, and announced that "the execution of this project, which has stood out for its participation, will now be carried out with a maxim: transparency.

For this we have launched various actions that will allow the residents of the avenue and any interested party to be informed in real time of the progress of the work and, at the same time, to respond to possible issues that may arise. "

In this way, the City Council has published a leaflet with all the updated information of the work plan in order to offer the neighbors all the details so that they know how the work will be developed, according to the forecasts, and how the avenue will be once that these end.

Likewise, the website murciaadelante.es already shows all the information related to the project, offering an accessible and participatory website for all Murcians.

Finally, and continuing with the line of transparency and participation imposed by the Government Team, the City of Murcia will enable a specific channel on Twitter and Facebook about the work.

In this way, the neighbors will be able to follow in real time the progress of the actions, interact directly with the project team and make queries and suggestions.

"We want Murcia to be participants in such an important project for their city and to know at the minute the progress of the works," said Ballesta.

The enabled profiles are, on Twitter, @axconsultas and, on Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/axconsultas

We must remember that this project has been exposed in a participatory process thanks to which the proposals and allegations of the different neighborhood and associative groups, political groups, the Ecologists in Action Association and other individuals have been integrated, agreeing with the technical observations of the School Official of Architects of the Region and the General Direction of Cultural Assets.

Work program

The works will be carried out in different zoned phases in order to cause the least possible inconvenience.

Thus, phase 1A (westbound from Santa Clara Street to Jaime I Avenue) and 1B (middle of the central promenade from Santa Clara Street to Jaime I Avenue) will run until June 18.

Phase 2A, corresponding to the other half of the central promenade from Gutierrez Mellado Street to the dead end street of Jesús María School, will be carried out during the non-school period from June 19 to August 30 in order not to affect at the entrance and exit of the educational center.

Finally, phase 2B, which encompasses the other half of the central promenade from the dead end street of the Jesús María school side to Enrique Villar Street, will take place from August 31 to October 19.

The works, in detail

This project will allow the incorporation of more than 14,000 square meters of new pedestrian surface, providing linearity to the entire walk from Santo Domingo to the Plaza Circular.

The action will be carried out in two stages: Phase I, which is the one that begins today, and which includes from Santo Domingo to Jaime I (with an area of 7,600 m2), and Phase II (6,800 m2), from Jaime I until the Circular, which is currently in writing because it is contacting the neighbors to show their suggestions.

In this way, a huge pedestrian itinerary of about 50,000 square meters will be created in the historic center of the city from La Glorieta to the Plaza Circular, going through Plaza Belluga, Trapería, Santo Domingo and Alfonso X.

This initiative will allow Alfonso X Avenue a total pedestrianization of the space that restricts vehicular traffic to residents, public transportation (taxis), school zone and loading-unloading in regulated hours, circulating in a single direction to Santo Domingo by the west road , the existing one next to the church of Las Claras.

The current area of terraces will be reconfigured without increasing it and a new system of intelligent waste collection and adaptive LED lighting with low consumption will be implemented.

With all of this, the aim is to reduce noise and pollution in this axis, providing greater neighborhood tranquility, while enabling new public spaces for stay and walk.

The project includes the enabling of a two-way bike lane that will run along the current west roadway.

Also, the current public bicycle rental system will be maintained in the vicinity of the new avenue.

Likewise, the existing trees will be maintained along the entire walk, more specimens will be planted (orange trees that will cover the entire west side and also palm trees) and shrub vegetation in flowerbeds as "orchards" on the east side, reaching triple the current vegetation and creating new spaces of natural shade.

The materials for the paving of the entire avenue will be based on stone in different formats and textures, a material of great strength and formal qualities.

The works are developed by the UTE formed by Orthem Services and Environmental Actions and Constructions Sangonera, with an investment of 1,881,195 euros, and in a period of eight months, so next autumn Murcia will have a totally renovated avenue

A reflection of the history of the city

The pedestrianization project will not only mean an aesthetic and environmental improvement of the area but will also offer teaching resources to learn about the history of the city.

In this way, elements and spaces dedicated to medieval Murcia will be included, a configuration that will allow us to get closer to the life of the protagonists of the time, such as the monarch that gives its name to the emblematic Avenida, Jaime I or Rey Lobo.

It will be a pedagogical and historical journey that will tell the story of the King Wolf (Ibn Mardanis) until the conquest of the city by Jaime I and his transfer to the King of Castile, Alfonso X, a period of splendor for Murcia.

Thus, the large pedestrian area will include plaques and references with the history of these characters and reference to their works, such as the Cantigas de Santa María.

Likewise, a plaza with palm trees dedicated to the Rey Lobo will be created, at the height of the Official Association of Quantity Surveyors and Technical Architects.
