Change Murcia asks the Plenary to stand in solidarity with the defenders of Human Rights (22/01/2018)

Murcia change has presented a motion to be discussed in the plenary on Thursday for the Corporation to show solidarity with activists who defend human rights and reject the criminalization of the work they perform and the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) at the borders .

In the initiative, Margarita Guerrero, councilor of municipal training, refers to cases of activists such as the Spanish Helena Maleno, the group "Walking between borders", which has been cited to testify in Tangier in relation to a criminal investigation of Moroccan security services "in an attempt by this to find alleged links with the mafias."

"It is a person belonging to an organization whose work has been recognized by the Ombudsman or the General Council of the Judiciary, and on which no incriminating evidence has been discovered, although for years it has been subject to a tough investigation, "Guerrero said.

This case "is framed in a European context of migration policy that focuses on the criminalization of migration," which coincides with the opinion of the UN special rapporteur Michel Forst, who said that we are witnessing "a global phenomenon that has to do with the closing of borders and with the attacks against migrants, seen as invasive ".

Guerrero explained that "racist discourse" is being contributed by institutions such as the European Union Border Agency, Frontex, or public officials such as the Spanish interior minister, Juan Antonio Zoido, who in recent months have accused NGOs "of favor illegal immigration. "

This situation has recently been denounced by the Institute of Racial Relations in an investigation in which they highlight that European countries "are using laws aimed at traffickers and smugglers to criminalize those who act for humanitarian reasons."

The authors of this report have documented the judicial process of 45 individual "humanitarian actors" under immigration or anti-smuggling laws in the last two years.

"The increase in criminalization," they warn, "may be feeding the extreme right."
