Polish and UMU researchers develop a new tool that facilitates the diagnosis and monitoring of eye diseases (22/01/2018)

One of the techniques of live visualization of the tissues that make up the human eye and which has had the most impact in recent years in Ophthalmology, is known as OCT (from the English Optical Coherence Tomography).

Currently this technique allows the ophthalmologist to obtain a view of structures as important as the retina, in the back of the eye, or the cornea and crystalline, in its anterior part.

But the particularities of the technique itself combined with the very optics of the eye make it impossible to visualize both parts in a single measurement or access intermediate structures such as the vitreous humor.

The Laboratory of Optics of the University of Murcia, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Torun in Poland, has developed a new OCT instrument that corrects these deficiencies by including a variable power electrically controlled lens.

This advance will allow access to parts of the eye, such as the vitreous humor, not sufficiently studied so far.

From a clinical point of view, for the ophthalmologist it means having a new tool that facilitates the diagnosis and monitoring of eye diseases.

In particular, the visualization of the vitreous could help to anticipate a possible retinal detachment.

By incorporating a lens that changes the optical parameters in response to an electrical current, innovative technology can produce images of higher quality than those currently available and make eye exams faster and more comfortable for patients by avoiding the need for images with Multiple instruments to observe different areas of the eye.

These advances have just been published in the magazine "Optica" for high-impact research of the American Optical Society (OSA).
