The wealth of the multicultural Murcia (22/12/2017)

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Social Rights, Conchita Ruiz, and members of the Municipal Corporation, received today in the Plenary Hall the representatives of the Immigrant Associations resident in the municipality of Murcia, on the occasion of the International Migrants Day, which was commemorated this past Monday.

The event was attended by members of the Federation of African Associations of Murcia (FAAM), Association of Senegalese, Migrations of CC OO, Association of Africans, World Association of Cultures, Association of Mali, Fassoton Association of Mali, Association of Ukrainians, Rumiñahui Association, Venezuelan Association, Murcia Acoge Association, Columbares Association, Cepaim Foundation, Caritas, Neri Association for Migrants, ACCEM, Intercultural Association Raíces, Association Nigeria, Association of Foreign Residents in the Region, Ghana Association and Bolivian Roots Association.

"Migrations are an essential part of the history of humanity and today we recognize the cultural, economic and social contributions made by millions of migrants and we demand the equality of all human beings," said José Ballesta, who recalled that "Murcia, a Throughout its history, it has been a land of welcome and has managed to treat with respect and generosity those who come from outside;

some values ​​symbolized in the image of the matron who presides over the facade of the Palacio del Almudí ".

Currently, more than 3 percent of the world population is grouped under the denomination of migrant population, a fact that expressing in absolute terms means that more than 200 million people have been forced to leave their place of origin.

In Murcia there are about 50,000 people of foreign origin residing in the municipality, representing 11% of the total population.

The City Council, through the Department of Social Rights, works for the integration and elimination of barriers, through support for schooling, the associative movement and training for immigrants.

Integration and coexistence

The City of Murcia has managed to form an extensive network of services and projects aimed at preventing social exclusion of the immigrant community as well as the promotion and social inclusion of the same in this municipality.

Through the Department of Social Rights, the City Council finances non-profit social entities for the development of social integration activities aimed at the immigrant population with the following objectives:

- Inform, advise and guide the immigrant population.

- Encourage the integration of the immigrant population in the host society.

- Guarantee dignified living conditions with measures aimed at the first reception and support in housing.

- Care and support for immigrant children.

- Prevention of gender violence among the immigrant population.

- The promotion of associationism and the consolidation and expansion of immigrant entities, promoting the consolidation of services towards the community and self-help groups.

- Encourage the interrelation between different groups and groups, with the environment, that favor respect and mutual understanding, that promote coexistence and participatory dynamics in the community.

- Promote initiatives of information, awareness and dynamisation that enhance the recognition and appreciation of cultural diversity, the dissemination of the values ​​of respect and coexistence, equal opportunities and non-discrimination.

- Promote knowledge and the promotion of identity elements as mechanisms of recognition and cultural expression of groups and communities, with a view to integration in a framework of social cohesion and in a context of cultural plurality.

- Encourage intermediation for access to services, resources and social facilities and for the participation of people and groups of immigrants in different areas of civic life.

- Offer initiatives of information, training and social support with a view to the integration in the host society of newly arrived persons and families, who come from other countries and / or cultural contexts.
