The campaign of the NGO Azul en Acción in Senegal allows the return of sight to more than 400 blind people (12/12/2017)

The organization, founded in 2000 within the Local Police of Murcia, has served 2,317 patients and graduated the vision to 1,327 people The campaign, which has the collaboration of the City of Murcia, has allowed to deliver more than 600 glasses correctors donated in our municipality

The NGO Azul en Acción has taken stock today of the campaign carried out in Senegal after carrying out a project of health intervention in which they have managed to restore sight to more than 400 blind people.

The councilors of the City of Murcia, Rebeca Pérez and Lola Sánchez, accompanied the representatives of the Local Police of Murcia in charge of promoting this solidarity expedition.

For 20 days a multidisciplinary team from different regions of Spain, formed by 29 collaborators of the Ong Azul in Action has moved to the Thies Region, in the country of Senegal, where it has managed to perform 402 surgical procedures of diseases such as Cataracts and Glaucoma in blind people.

The team, made up of ophthalmologists, anesthesiologists, opticians, nurses and logisticians, has treated 2,317 patients who, in addition to those operated on, have identified pathologies and administered pharmacological treatments that in many of the cases have prevented irreversible blindness due to pathologies such as trachoma. .

The vision has also been graduated to 1,327 people, identifying refractive errors and donating corrective glasses to 615 of them.

"On this occasion, in addition to thanking the NGO for its great work, we must value the conditions in which this campaign has been carried out in Senegal, both for the extreme weather conditions of heat and humidity, with 45 degrees and 100% humidity, as by the extensive work days of more than 16 uninterrupted hours, to try to meet the huge numbers of patients from all over the country to be served, "said Councilwoman Rebeca Perez.

"In the country of Senegal, specialized health care, such as ophthalmology and optics, is very deficient for the population, especially those living in rural areas, which makes it impossible to access it for two fundamental reasons. , firstly because there is no health care in these areas and secondly because they do not have the resources to travel and pay for private assistance in the capital, so this type of campaign becomes more relevant, "said Lola Sánchez, councilor for Traffic, Security and Citizen Protection.

The Ong Azul in Action also has the City of Murcia Ophthalmological Hospital ", equipped with modern means and equipment for ophthalmology and optician consultation, as well as for surgeries, which allows it, since 2007, to develop this type of campaigns of intervention in this field in the countries of Togo, Morocco, Senegal and India. To this is added the team of professionals with extensive knowledge and expertise as well as experience in cooperation.

The City of Murcia reaffirms its collaboration with the NGO Azul en Acción in addition to the collaboration of private entities such as the Obra Social La Caixa or the Cajamurcia Foundation among others, as well as the solidarity of Murcia.
