International experts gather in Murcia to boost technological applications in Spanish (20/09/2017)

José Ballesta was positive that "the advances in this sector in expansion take place in our language, Spanish, the second in the world in number of native speakers with 472 million people."

Secretary of State José María Lasalle announced the main advances that are being developed in our country in the framework of the Plan for the Impulse of Language Technologies.

The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, participated today in the inauguration of the XXXIII International Congress of the Spanish Society for Natural Language Processing (SEPLN) and the Conference on Applications of Language Technologies, an event that had the presence of the Secretary of State for the Information Society and the Digital Agenda, José María Lassalle.

In his speech, José Ballesta valued the work of the 120 professionals attending this International Congress for "rediscovering human language through the immeasurable possibilities offered by new information and communication technologies" and expressed his satisfaction that "the advances in this expanding sector will occur in our language, Spanish, the second in the world in number of native speakers with 472 million people, only surpassed by Chinese Mandarin. "

At the inauguration, which was also attended by the Minister of Finance, Andrés Carrillo, the UMU rector, José Orihuela, and the president of the Spanish Society for Natural Language Processing, Luis Alfonso Ureña;

the Secretary of State announced the main advances that are being developed in our country, within the framework of the Plan of Impulse of the Language Technologies.

Lassalle reported on the priority projects of action of the Language Technologies Plan that will be applied in strategic sectors such as justice, health, tourism and the management of public aid.

Specifically, the Secretary of State announced the signing in the near future of a collaboration agreement with the Center for Judicial Documentation of the General Council of the Judiciary (Cendoj) to address through language technologies the treatment of judicial sentences in Spain.

The project aims to have a direct effect on the reduction of time in the field of justice.

In addition, in the health area, cooperation with the Autonomous Communities and the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality itself was highlighted in order to create tools for processing electronic medical records, as well as technical data sheets for useful solutions for health professionals and researchers .

In tourism, Lassalle explained that systems are being developed for opinion analysis and conversational systems that help the interpretation of comments and suggestions for the tourism sector.

Finally, in collaboration with other ministries, efforts are being made to optimize and improve efficiency when distributing aid in innovation or subsidy systems for companies and research centers.

The agreement signed with the Secretary of State for R & D & I to optimize and improve efficiency when distributing grants or subsidies is having an excellent development.

Congress on Natural Language Processing

The Debate Day, organized by SESIAD and Red.es, is celebrated in conjunction with the XXXIII International Congress of the Spanish Society for Natural Language Processing (SEPLN 2017), which also takes place, from today until Friday, in the capital of Murcia.

It is attended by more than 120 experts and representatives from different administrations through presentations and workshops.
