The historic palm grove of Santiago and Zaraíche recovers the traditional irrigation system (18/08/2017)

The Mayor, José Ballesta, accompanied by the Councilor for Modernization of Administration, Urban Quality and Participation, José Guillén, visited this morning the Palmeral de Santiago and Zaraíche, which is already fully renovated after a recovery work that has been extended during Approximately four months.

Ballesta has presented the recovery of the traditional irrigation system of this natural site that counts on a unique system of traditional irrigation from the contribution of flows from the Acequia Zaraiche by the west and the net of drainage of surplus waters, realized by the Azarbe From Cantino to Levante.

The Murcians thus have a new area of ​​stay in this natural enclave in which, in addition, and as announced by the Mayor, "from next October will be realized cultural activities that will give life to this space and that will enhance the Beauty of this natural complex that we have recovered ".

To this end, it has reserved a space with the necessary infrastructure to host concerts, theater, dance and any other cultural event.

The recovery work of this large green lung of 9,000 square meters has consisted of the maintenance and intensive care of the existing specimens, the planting of selected trees and a green and floral mantle, with a network of trails that cross the alignments of the most Of 600 date palms - some with more than 200 years - for public use.

To give this environment a greater liveliness have been planted balustrades, saucos, myrtles and different herbaceous, forming in this way a lower stratum, and wooded with selected examples of membrilleros and pomegranates.

This action seeks to recover the original image of the palm grove where not only palm trees but also other native species were cultivated.

The work of conditioning, framed in the Plan of Action of the orchard of Murcia, have also allowed the installation of benches and places of stay as pergolas integrated with the surroundings.

Also beacons have been placed in the entrances to prevent access with cars and preserve the beauty of this space.

In addition, all the existing palm trees are following an innovative system of combating the red weevil by means of biological treatments with fungi, guaranteeing the good health of the specimens with treatments alternative to the chemical products.

The palm grove of Santiago and Zaraíche, classified as Environmental and Landscape Heritage of the municipality of Murcia, began a deterioration process towards the end of the 70s and its property was acquired by the City Council in 2014.

The recovery works of the area have meant an investment close to 70,000 euros.
