The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, along with the councilors of the Government team, and international observers participating in the project 'Murcia Urban DNA', today presented the Agitation Phase that starts the thousand actions of improvement in the neighborhood Of Santa Eulalia that, from today until next Friday 9, will carry out about 300 municipal technicians of the different Councils of the City.

"The thousand interventions that will be carried out during this week have been created to the measure of the neighbors of the neighborhood and to project the essence of this historical enclave and, at the same time, cosmopolitan that is Santa Eulalia and that lives a moment of full Social and cultural effervescence, "said the mayor.

The perimeter of action includes a geographical area of ​​190,000 square meters, extending not only by Santa Eulalia, but also by the neighborhoods of San Juan and San Lorenzo.

"In total, 27 streets and 12 places will benefit from this process of transformation that has been enriched with the more than 3,000 contributions made by neighborhood residents and merchants during the Participation Phase," said José Ballesta.

The actions that have begun today include the remodeling of plazas, urban murals, tree planting, graffiti cleaning, facade painting, container burial, zebra steps repainting, installation of bleachers and benches, new lighting, open Wi-Fi hotspots And free of charge, cultural and tourist elements, water fountains, removal of bollards, improvement of the terraces, extension of sidewalks, leveling of roadways, children's games and circuits of gerontogimnasia, works to guarantee the accessibility, etc.

"In addition to these microactions of urban acupuncture, the project contemplates major interventions, such as the new Intergenerational Leisure Zone to be installed on the Paco Street lot, the overall improvement action of the Plaza de Europa with the Saavedra Fajardo market , The cultural and historical revaluation of the Plaza Sardoy or the transformation of Santa Quiteria in the Street of the Letters ", underlined the mayor.

Another major intervention in this neighborhood will be the project of signaling the old Arab wall that runs through the different streets and the expansion of the visitor center of the wall of Santa Eulalia, a larger action that will continue in time.

We must take into account that the set of actions will involve the planting of a hundred trees throughout the neighborhood and the development of six large urban murals, after carrying out the cleaning of graffiti.

Intergenerational Leisure Zone

In the existing building on Victorio Street - a neighbor of the neighborhood - is going to demolish the wall that has to the street Paco, to open this space to public use and that can be enjoyed by neighbors of all ages.

It will create a zone of urban orchards of about 100 square meters of surface so that the neighbors grow their own hortofrutícolas products.

It will also reserve a space to play petanque, bowling huertanos or caliche and will create areas of stay.

On the other hand, an industrial container, 20 square meters, and other elements will be installed that will host exhibitions of photography, painting, sculpture and other artistic disciplines.

In addition, a stage will be set up to carry out micro theater activities, acoustic concerts, poetry recitals and dance performances, and a wall in which projections can be made and also used as summer cinema.

At the entrance, huge vegetable letters over ten meters long with the name of the neighborhood will welcome visitors and give identity to the project.

In addition, in order to make the stay more cozy and pleasant, the perimetral walls will be covered with ivy and a dozen trees will be placed.

Integral improvement Plaza de Europa and Saavedra Fajardo market

On the one hand, in Selgas Street, next to the Saavedra Fajardo market, a large mural will be painted on the façade facing the Plaza de Europa.

The objective is to open the market to the street, so that some wooden steps will be installed, extending the gastronomic use and stay of the street.

On the other hand, in the Plaza de Europa will reorder the terraces to the right side, under a large pergola that will shadow the square and will have led lighting.

It will create a kindergarten in the background, a wooden stand will be installed in the front of the square and will be enabled an open and free wifi point, just as the neighbors requested in the process of participation for the redesign of the square.

Cultural and historical revaluation of the Plaza Sardoy

This space of the city houses that was the old Jewish synagogue of Murcia.

The performance will remember these cultural and historical roots: murals will be made, distinctive elements will be painted on the ground and olive trees will be planted.

A sculpture by the artist Hernández Cano, called 'La vendimiadora', will also be placed, and intelligent light sensors with presence control will be installed to discourage vandalism.

Santa Quiteria: Calle de las Letras

In the double façade of the building located between Calle Santa Quiteria and Plaza de las Balsas, an open air museum will be created with images that will decorate its windows and that will be changed periodically.

Calle Santa Quiteria will become a Calle de las Letras, as the pavement will be decorated with literate quotes and furniture and living areas will be installed with book exchange, becoming the first bookcrossing point of the municipality.

International observers focus on Santa Eulalia

The project to revitalize the neighborhood of Santa Eulalia is an international benchmark for the new urban intervention model it proposes, being considered as an example of good practice in Europe.

The interest aroused by this model of intervention has motivated Murcia to be chosen as the European capital destined to host the international meeting of networks of cities participating in the Urbact-Interactive Cities project and the Urbelac (Urban European and Latin American and Caribbean Cities).

This international team, composed of about twenty experts, will be analyzing until Friday the intervention in Santa Eulalia, as well as other strategic projects of the municipality, such as 'Murcia River' or 'Murcia Smart City'.

In particular, representatives of Genoa, Rome and Milan (Italy), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Campo Grande (Brazil), Guadalajara (Mexico), Montevideo (Paraguay), Cuenca (Ecuador), Asda (France), Viseu (Portugal), Edinburgh (United Kingdom), as well as members of the Inter-American Development Bank and the European Commission.
