Declared BIC the Garden of Floridablanca of Murcia (26/04/2017)

The Governing Council has approved to declare the Garden of Floridablanca, located in the city of Murcia, as a Property of Cultural Interest, with a category of 'historic garden'.

The relevant role of the Floridablanca Garden in the urban landscape of Murcia is more than evident from the management of the old mall in the eighteenth century and its transformation into a garden in the nineteenth century with the new urbanistic concerns derived from the Enlightenment as an articulating element Of the main entrance and exit ways in the city.

The XIX century represented an important urban transformation and the way of exit towards Cartagena became the prolongation of the city, being the zone framed between the place Camachos and the church of the Carmen.

The role of the garden as the main space in the city for the last three centuries has led to it include monuments such as the Count of Floridablanca, Santiago Baglietto (1848), the poet Jara Carrillo and Jose Selgas, made by José Planes In 1933;

And the bust to the sculptor Antonio Garrigós, work of Jose Molera (1984).

In addition, the garden conserves the old door of the slaughterhouse like access, projected by Jaime Bort in 1748.

Alongside these urban, architectural and sculptural elements, the park's great botanical and scenic appeal stands out, with unique examples of different tree species.

This set, together with its relevance of meeting and celebration and traditional use in popular festivals, makes it necessary to guarantee and promote the declaration of the Floridablanca Garden as BIC, its delimitation being the wall and gate of the enclosure.

The process for the declaration of BIC of this emblematic garden began in June 2014 and has received favorable reports from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Santa Maria de La Arrixaca, the Royal Academy Alfonso X the Wise and the University of Murcia, who have Highlighting the special significance of the good and the need to protect it.
