It is an ecological floral sculpture made with recyclable materials, made up of more than 1,000 plants, flowers and aromatic species.

José Ballesta: "This initiative is an experience of social participation that is part of the Urban DNA project, with which the neighbors themselves materialize the vision they want from their neighborhood"

The Plaza de Europa will be the first of the city of Murcia to be designed entirely by the neighbors, in this case, the neighborhood of Santa Eulalia, within the experience of social participation called Urban DNA;

A project with which the own Murcia materialize the vision they want from their neighborhood, with transformative actions and distinctive character and idiosyncrasy of their neighborhood.

The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, accompanied by the Councilor for Youth and Development Cooperation, Rebeca Pérez, presented this morning in the square this morning this initiative includes the installation of an innovative vertical ephemeral garden, formed by more than 1,000 plants, Flowers and aromatic species.

This is a floral sculpture that will be maintained throughout this week, sustainable and made with recyclable materials, whose pots will then be delivered to the neighbors so they can plant them on the ground.

In addition, it has night illumination of minimum consumption.

"This ecological facility offers a panoramic and new view of this public space of the city that the neighbors will be shaping day by day with their ideas and contributions, resulting in a collective project that will materialize the week of May 29 to June 4, "explained José Ballesta.

In particular, in the Plaza de Europa, neighbors can design the new layout of green areas, trees, street furniture and children's areas.

To do this, they can contemplate the bird's eye view from the top of the vertical garden and reconfigure that public space through an electronic application (which can also be downloaded on Google Play under the name 'Citying Urban Players').

Each part of the square, which has been divided into modules, can be customized and used for a specific use.

Currently, all the proposals are being collected and a jury composed of technicians and representatives of the neighborhood will decide between the best contributions, to materialize the new design during that week, with the supervision and advice of the technicians.

The vertical garden of the Plaza de Europa adds to the floral monuments that are engalanando the squares and gardens of Murcia during these holidays, within the initiative Gardens of Spring of the City of Murcia.

Urban DNA: the unique character of each neighborhood

The City Council is promoting the participation and direct involvement of the Murcia in the care and improvement of their neighborhoods, through the initiative Urban DNA, whose pilot project is being developed in Santa Eulalia.

Thus, more than 300 technicians of Parks and Gardens, Urban Quality, Road Cleaning, Traffic, Lighting Service, Police, etc.

Will carry out, according to the indications of the neighbors, more than 1.000 actions of improvement of the public spaces, in the week of the 29 of May to the 4 of June.

Santa Eulalia, an international reference model

The project to revitalize the neighborhood of Santa Eulalia is an international reference for this new model of urban intervention and has been considered as an example of good practice in Europe, by the involvement of different social groups.

The interest aroused by this experience of social participation has motivated that Murcia be chosen as the European capital destined to host the week of May 30 to June 3, the international meeting of cities that participate in projects of integrated urban development.
