The research "Muscular echovariation: a new biomarker in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis", financed by the University's own Plan, analyzes the texture of the muscle and its internal behavior, and not only the thickness, which in many cases led to error, these being False diagnosis is one of the main problems faced by specialists.
The researchers Dr. Jacinto Javier Martínez Payá, Dr. María Elena del Baño Aledo, and Dr. José Ríos Díaz of the ECOFISTEM Group of UCAM, have developed this new ultrasound biomarker that allows to differentiate more accurately the healthy subjects of affected patients By the disease of the ALS.
This painless system only needs a common ultrasound to accelerate the diagnosis of this devastating disease, and can also serve as a valuation tool in future clinical trials.
UCAM researchers warn that it is important that this new marker be supplemented with standard diagnostic tests such as electromyography and clinical tests for the diagnosis of the disease, since it can not be used as an independent diagnostic tool for ALS.
The research has a great scientific importance, as it is demonstrated in its next publication by the important magazine "Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology", and is pending of other publications in different specialized magazines.
Likewise, the results obtained through this scientific collaboration between the UCAM research group and the La Fe University and Polytechnic Hospital have allowed the neuromuscular ultrasound to be incorporated into the diagnostic process of the patients affected by ALS belonging to this hospital.
