José Ballesta presented the Gold Insignia to the retired firefighters on the day of their Patron, San Juan de Dios.

The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, accompanied by the Councilor for Traffic, Security and Citizen Protection, Lola Sánchez, today delivered the Gold Insignia to retired firefighters of the Fire Service of the City of Murcia, on the occasion of the holiday of His Patron, Saint John of God.

Specifically, the mayor distinguished a total of eight retired firefighters (José Luis Menéndez, Pedro Jose Albaladejo, Tomás Torres, José Francisco García, Manuel Menárguez, Francisco Garnés, Eliseo Bosque and Joaquín Muñoz) as well as the late operator María del Carmen Garcia, whose badge was collected by his mother.

During the ceremony, the mayor recognized the work of about 200 professionals who make up the Fire Service of the City of Murcia.

"You form an elite body that demands the highest dedication, not only from the point of view of physical preparation but also of technical training."

In this sense, José Ballesta remembered his performance during the episodes of intense rains that were recorded in Murcia last December, in which more than 300 services were performed and guard personnel increased by 70%.

"You responded above what is called duty, acting immediately before the hundreds of incidences you received and with a continuous presence with the neighbors, performing a task that will remain in the memory of all Murcia," he said.

600 rescues made in one year

The total of the services made by the Firemen of Murcia last year amounted to a total of 4,132 interventions.

Specifically, 1,766 fires were attended, 601 rescues were carried out, technical assistance was provided on 660 occasions and inspection and advisory work were carried out on 1,105 incidents.
