The setting of the Fuensanta, ready for the descent of La Morenica this Thursday (07/03/2017)

José Ballesta and Bishop Jose Manuel Lorca Plans visit the Sanctuary to check the state of this emblematic environment of Murcia.

The access ramp to the temple has been restored after the damages suffered by the intense rains of December.

The Mirador del Santuario de La Fuensanta, located in the upper part of the Quitapesares, will be restored after more than 50 years.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, and the bishop of Cartagena, Jose Manuel Lorca Planes, visited today the Sanctuary of the Fuensanta, to check the state of the access to the temple, facing the next descent of the Virgin of this Thursday, which will remain in the Cathedral during Holy Week and Spring Festival.

"This emblematic environment for all Murcia is prepared for the next descent of the Patroness of Murcia, thanks to the collaboration agreement between the City Council and the Diocese of Cartagena, which includes new actions for comprehensive improvement in the Sanctuary surroundings and green areas, As well as the recovery of the Mirador, explained the mayor.

Due to the heavy rains that occurred last December, an emergency work was carried out on the ramp giving access to the Sanctuary, guaranteeing security and better access to this environment visited by thousands of faithful.

The rest of work to be undertaken in successive phases, affecting an area of ​​more than 1,300 square meters on the slope of La Fuensanta, include planting trees and shrubs, creating new areas of stay, arrangement of Parterres, pavement repair and improvement of walking areas.

In this way, the City Council, through the Department of Modernization of Administration, Urban Quality and Participation, contributes to the recreational, social and cultural revitalization of this area of ​​the sierra de Murcia, through a project designed by the technicians Appointed by the bishopric.

The present temple, of baroque style, rises on the place where before there was a medieval hermitage.

It is an area with a deep religious dedication that has lasted for centuries, where important landmarks such as the Verdolay Iberian Sanctuary, the Paleocristian Basilica of Algezares or the convent of Santa Catalina del Monte are located.

El Mirador will recover after more than 50 years

The Mirador del Santuario de La Fuensanta, located in the upper part of the Quitapesares bar, will be restored after more than 50 years.

The action will include both the improvement of accesses and its surface, as well as the rocky escarpments that lie below.

The work, phase by stage

Phase 1: Improvements in accessibility, arrangement of the access ramp and the Mirador, reform of walls and masonry.

Phase 2: arrangement of cornices, agglomerates, painted walls and lintels, recovery of aged brick.

Phase 3: arrangement of the ornamental fountain environment, painted walls, recuperation of vegetation and slopes.

Phase 4: cleaning of slopes, plantations, street furniture, children's games.

Temple Back Garden Arrangement

This past summer the City Council has already carried out conditioning works in the back of the Sanctuary, where the garden extends.

The maintenance work included the conditioning of the pedestrian walkway, the replacement of the curbs and the repair of the parterres.
