The PSOE demands the government of Ballesta "to look for the formula so that no young person of the municipality leaves the studies by lack of economic resources" (17/02/2017)

The Municipal Socialist Group will defend on Thursday, February 23, a motion in the municipal plenary session urging the Ballesta government to seek the appropriate formula so that no young people of the municipality of Murcia have to abandon their university studies due to economic difficulties in their family.

Likewise, the PSOE proposes to create a municipal scholarship grant or study aid, which could be a way to help the young Murcia from his administration to carry out his studies.

Socialist councilor Susana Hernández has indicated that "budget cuts, legal reforms and ideological policies of the PP in the government of Spain have led to a drastic reduction of the grants awarded and, therefore, the students benefited," And recalled that "scholarship policy is the most egalitarian policy that exists, so with the Socialist Party in government, the scholarships were a right that the PP is violating."

Hernández has insisted that "we are going in the opposite direction to the rest of Europe, putting more obstacles in accessing a scholarship and adding requirements that only make it difficult to access the scholarships to those who precisely need them the most, Those belonging to families with fewer resources. "

This situation, which was totally unrelated to the educational community of Murcia, was expressed in the words of the University of Murcia's vice chancellor in 2013, stating that in 2012, 1,000 scholarships were denied to students and 4,000 denials were denied in Murcia. 2013.

"That is why," said the councilor of the PSOE, "already in July 2013, from the Municipal Socialist Group we brought to the municipal plenary an initiative for the City of Murcia to arbitrate the necessary measures so that no student in the municipality had to abandon the Despite the importance of the issue and the implication that, we believe, the City of Murcia must have in this sense, the PP claimed in that plenary that the competences were regional and ended up imposing an alternative motion that Any responsibility remained to the consistory, indicating that the request of the PSOE of not leaving any student without a scholarship was transferred to the counseling ".

In the opinion of the Socialist Group, equality of opportunity is fundamental to build a society in which anyone can aspire to dedicate himself to what he wants, only depending on his effort and not on the social and / or economic position of his family.

"For this reason it is crucial that the Administration watch for this equality of opportunities and the City of Murcia can not be less, having to ensure that no young people in the municipality give up studying for lack of resources," added the Socialist mayor.

In the initiative presented by the Socialist Municipal Group to the Municipal Plenary have collected requests from the main associations of students to not only require the City of Murcia to take action in the matter and offer aid to young Murcia who want to study, but also To urge the Ministry of Education and Universities and the Ministry of Education to convene a Scholarship Observatory, to modify the academic requirements to end the barriers to access to these grants and to create a 'rescue scholarship' Those students who have had to drop out because of the academic criteria introduced by the PP in the 2012 reform can be reinstated to the university system, among other proposals.
