This collection of paintings whose theme revolves around Christmas can be visited at the Temporary Exhibition Hall Salzillo Museum until February 2017 and in it are represented various European schools of the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries.

Christmas is a liturgical feast that became popular from the sixteenth century and eventually became one of the most recurrent within the Christian iconography representations.

During the Renaissance artists they showed the concept of ideal beauty and this exhibition is shown in works such as Van Cleve flamenco or tables Comontes Antonio de Toledo.

Issues related to the birth and childhood of the baby Jesus were in line with the baroque sensibility.

It is what happens with the theme of the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Magi, in which naturalism and closeness was sought regarding the popular characters, as seen in the works of Vicente Castelló and Francisco Camilo, the Flamenco David Ryckaert III or those of the Neapolitan painters like Massimo Stanzione, Luca Giordano and Antonio Sarnelli.

There are also scenes of the Massacre of the Innocents or Rout Egypt Brueghel de Velours showing his mastery of the genre of landscape.

The Museum Bilbao has also borrowed two sculptures from the time of Salzillo.

On the one hand an Immaculate of Colombo, author of the Virgin of Charity of Cartagena and a Dolorosa by Juan Pascual de Mena in the same year that Francisco Salzillo made the Dolorosa of the Brotherhood of Jesus.

This temporary loan was made around a program of collaboration between the Salzillo Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts.

For this Christmas Salzillo Museum has lent the Bethlehem Salzillo which opens on Friday 28 at the Bilbao museum.
