The City Council approved the plan for the recovery of the historic palm grove of Zaraiche (30/09/2016)

Ballesta: "The aim is to recover and return the residents of the municipality this unique ecosystem in the region of Murcia, which has 9,000 m2 and more than 600 copies of palm, many of them centuries old."

The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, accompanied by the Councillor for Modernization, Urban Quality and Participation, Jose Guillen, today introduced the draft natural recovery of Palm Grove Zaraiche, a large green area for public use 9,000 square meters, listed as Environmental Heritage and Landscape of the municipality of Murcia.

Performance improvement and value, which has now been approved by the Governing Board for submission to contract for an amount of 66,800 euros, "aims to recover and return to the residents of the municipality this historic orchard that has more than palm 600 copies, some of them close to 200 years, a unique ecosystem in the Region of Murcia ", stressed José Ballesta.

This garden area, located next to Lane Palmeral of the parish of Santiago and Zaraiche, has a large population of date palms and a unique traditional irrigation system from the input flow from the Acequia Zaraiche by the setting and drainage of excess water, made by the Cantino Azarbe to lift.

In addition to the rows of palm trees, the optimum conditions for the operation of other associated crops are given inside.

"The Action Plan of the Huerta de Murcia that we are promoting the City Council seeks the recovery of agricultural soils Huerta, for culture, value and enjoyment and, in this sense, The Palm Grove Zaraiche stands out as one of the most emblematic of the municipality, we want to give back to all Murcia traditional natural places, "said the mayor.

A green lung with a network of trails

The performance of adjustment that has now approved involves the creation of a large green area of ​​9,000 square meters in the north of the town of Murcia, with a trails network traveling on alignments of palm trees, with benches and places to stay as pergolas integrated with the environment and planting a green and floral blanket that integrates both palms as with the selected trees will be planted.

The intervention within three months from the award of the contract and involves the creation of a network of platforms that facilitate pedestrian transits and allow you to perform maintenance of this palm grove, which began a process of deterioration in the late 70s and whose property was acquired by the city in 2014.

This improvement plan allow you to practice agriculture at three heights: date palms in the upper layer, causing a microclimate that allows the existence of an intermediate stratum occupied by the cups of fruit (be planted also pomegranates, quinces, etc. .) and the lower layer, an ornamental horticulture agriculture (herbaceous, alfalfa, vegetables, etc.).

In addition, the Department of Employment, Tourism and Culture is developing a complementary upgrading project that includes a stage for cultural revitalization in the environment of this growing area to be reclaimed for public use.

Experimental method of biological control weevil

The City Council and carried out this summer conditioning this environment which is divided into two areas: Palmeral Grande Palmeral Chico (both separated by 350 meters away), weeding, pruning, watering and cleaning the specimens, which has ensured the continuity of the traditional irrigation system.
