Discovered a new method to remove dyes from wastewater (29/09/2016)

The dumping of textile dyes in the environment is one of the major concerns affecting the quality of soil and water.

Therefore much attention is being paid to the design of new methods for decontamination.

The Catholic University of Murcia, through the Doctoral Thesis "Application of cyclodextrins in different industrial sectors: enzyme biotechnology, food processing and water decontamination", authored by José Antonio Pellicer Balsolobre, has developed a new method for removing dyes waters waste from the textile industry, by using cyclodextrins.

The researcher argues that this finding, in combination with another variety of novel techniques that are beginning to be implemented in the textile industry, is a major step which will absorb the dyes present in the wastewater with two important benefits: the reuse of free water color after dyeing processes as well as the recovery and reuse of different dyes.

Research conducted by Drs Estrella Nunez Delicado and Maria Isabel Fortea Gorbe, which have collaborated different institutions like Creations Aromatic Industrial (CARINSA), the Research Association of Textile Industry (AITEX), the University of Bari and Colorprint, and which has been partially funded by Dyes4Ever European project, it has been qualified to Outstanding cum laude.
