IV International Congress of linguistics, literature and cultural studies (16/09/2016)

Despite its good position, David Marsh, an expert on the subject, says the key is not to start at an earlier age, and proposes to change the way they are doing things in Spain

In order to analyze the challenges and opportunities for language and culture in the future, the Department of Languages ​​at the Catholic University of Murcia is celebrating the International Congress of linguistics, literature and cultural studies (CILLEC), which in its fourth edition entitled 'changes and transitions: multiple approaches within linguistics, bilingualism, literature and culture', aspects that have adapted to social and structural movements.

David Marsh, an expert in bilingual education and CLIL / CLIL, University of Jyväskylä (Finland), gave the conference "Shaping Tomorrow CLIL as an Educational Innovation for the 21st Century iGeneration 'in which analyzed the role of the English language changes in the twenty-first century, and skills have to develop society.

On the current situation of bilingualism in Europe, Marsh emphasizes that there are many countries that have to reformulate the conception of these teachings, including Spain, and integrate teaching English to other subjects.

But despite this, it has stressed that much of Spain and Italy that go together in this way-are leading in the insertion process of bilingualism, while France and Germany "are a little slower."

"In Spain there is the will," he said, and noted as the main motivation of this educational process, the giving access to everyone who can speak English.

For the expert, the key is not to start at an earlier age "unless you have well-trained teachers" so that the solution proposed is to change the way they are doing things in Spain.

Culture

Another prominent figures who have participated in the Congress was John Storey, Emeritus Professor of Cultural Studies and Popular Culture at the University of Sunderland (UK), who has lectured on 'Utopia and politics of reality'.

During his speech, focusing on the cultural sphere, he assured that what we call reality, is basically a construction made by humans themselves.

"We live in a world that is increasingly unstable, where inequality is growing, and what is asked is, among other things, ways that allow us to think and see us out of the present moment," he says, and to make a change , "first you have to be able to conceive that change, and what is utopia can see and conceive these alternatives."

Modern languages

In addition to this Congress, another example of the commitment of the UCAM for language training and cultural studies, is that the institution teaches the degree in Modern Languages.

This, with a great practical cargo trains students in the use of two foreign languages ​​(English-German and English-French) and knowledge of their culture, economy and history.
