The ninth that has kept Murcia safe from the plague since 1648 (12/06/2016)

In 1648, the then mayor prayed a novena at the Convent of the Sisters of San Antonio and since then, the municipality has been safe from the disease

The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, will attend this afternoon at the Eucharist on the occasion of the feast of San Antonio, which commemorates the eradication of the plague epidemic that ravaged Murcia during the first half of the seventeenth century and will be officiated by Franciscan monks in the Convent of the Franciscan Sisters of Concepcionistas San Antonio.

This tradition has its origins in 1648, when the then mayor of the city of Murcia attended the Convent of these -then nuns located in the C / San Antonio de Murcia and now the C / Rise to Fuensanta Algezares) and he prayed a novena in order to cease the disease that was causing so many victims in the municipality.

According to tradition, this gesture kept Murcia safe from the epidemic until today and since that year, it is customary that a member of the Municipal Corporation attends eurcaristía and assigned to San Antonio (whose feast Monday morning) to ensure the good health of Murcia and its neighbors.
