Murcia earns more than 1,600 square meters of pedestrian areas in the center of the city (06/06/2016)

The proposed pedestrianization of Alfonso X the Wise Avenue Woodland includes maintenance, installation of playground equipment and an innovative adaptive awnings and special lighting.

Councillor for Public Works, Roque Ortiz, presented this afternoon, before councilors of municipal politicians and professionals who live or work on Alfonso X Avenue groups, neighbors, merchants, proposal and draft proposed pedestrianization of the stretch comprising between Jaime I avenue and the Plaza de Santo Domingo, opening a participatory process to agree the project.

Ortiz explained that "this proposed draft has been prepared by the municipal technical services, with the highest technical rigor, after a study of several months on all aspects that may be affected as accessibility, public transport, street cleaning, taxi, bike path, terraces, shops, parking access, the environment, noise ... "

"What we've begun today is a process of social and effective participation of all individuals and stakeholders. To do this, we will open various channels of participation and suggestions, such as a mailbox on the same street and a website".

This initiative seeks to complete a major axis defining a space of great significance for the city, joining Alfonso X Avenue to the River Segura.

So with this project pedestrians will earn a total of 1,664 square meters, completing a pedestrian surface from the Teniente Flomesta Avenue to Jaime I, of 53,136 square meters and one kilometer pedestrian promenade.

The project maintains the current character of the area as a recreational, commercial and ride space, while modernizing and reconfigures space.

It also seeks to achieve a significant environmental improvement, especially on pollution and noise.

Thus, the whole area will be at the same level, with the same pavement Santo Domingo, and a single lane with intelligent pivot for residents, loading and unloading and emergency vehicles and cleaning up toward Santo Domingo will continue.

In addition, two children's play areas will be created.

Another novelty is that it will have a special lighting system, adaptable to the circumstances, and a system of awnings or configurable candles in different positions, to highlight areas, creating scenarios or spaces shade at different times of the year.

Also, it keeps and increase the existing trees by placing flower beds and new plant species.

The taxi will move to the door of the Archaeological Museum and motorcycle parking and MUyBICi bench in its current location will remain.

The terraces will remain, in full, to enjoy Murcia and as a right to economic activity of the owners although its functionality will improve significantly and will be a more pleasant for customers and for neighboring space as they decrease noise levels.

The investment in this project is around 1.5 million euros and the execution time of the work, which will allow maintaining circulation and full functioning of the avenue, will be about 6-8 months.
