The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, today made delivery of the hallmarks of School Gardens Network municipal program, this course has brought growing vegetables from Murcia and organic farming about 5,000 pupils from 21 schools in the municipality Murcia.

The ceremony took place in conjunction with the opening of the First Week of Huerta de Murcia, an event which will run until next Sunday, and has more than fifty activities for all ages such as guided tours, a food fair workshops in nature and Fair wear and Huertanas traditions, among others.

"Let the children have the opportunity to plant their own hands the typical vegetables of our land is the best environmental awareness campaign, since not only learn the technique of cultivation, they are aware of the ecological value of a unique natural environment as is the Huerta de Murcia, a teaching that will accompany them throughout their lives, "said the mayor.

Thus, through the network of school gardens, nearly 5,000 students have been involved in planting and collecting two crops a year: the winter (artichokes, beans, etc.) and Summer (tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, etc.).

The City is working with schools providing advice in the planning and implementation of gardens, with teaching materials, educational talks and distinctions that have now been delivered, to identify school gardens in every school.

Exhibition 'Murcia, ecology of a city'

The act with school has been developed within the framework of the exhibition 'Murcia, ecology of a city' that houses the building Abenarabi until next April 4.

This is a traveling exhibition that, through educational panels, collects the environmental characteristics of the municipality, from water resources to waste management, and aims to sensitize students about caring for our nearest natural environment.

The exhibition is part of the program of Environmental Education of the City of Murcia, which is 20 years, and has reached more than 500,000 students from all over the municipality.

250 have also been projected photographs with images of the characteristic landscapes of the Huerta de Murcia.

The City recovers the city plans nineteenth

In Building Abenarabi, José Ballesta also presented the General Plan of Murcia in the late nineteenth century, a work of great historical and documentary value, made in June 1896 by the renowned civil engineer and architect Garcia Faria.

"This is a large map of the city of Murcia where you can see all the floor plans of historic public buildings like the Romea Theatre, the Plaza de Toros, City Hall and the Cathedral, which can be seen with high degree of definition, "said the mayor.

The work, which has been recovered from the municipal warehouses, is exhibited from today in the lobby of the building Abenarabi, and was commissioned by the Mayor Juan de la Cierva and Peñafiel Barcelona architect García Faria, within the project of developing the Plan urban city, a design that served as a reference for more than half a century for growth projects Murcia.

Information booth Week in Santo Domingo Huerta

On the occasion of the opening of the Week of Huerta de Murcia, the City Council has set up a stand to the public in Santo Domingo, from which all information concerning it will be posted to more than fifty activities to be held until Sunday 28, as well as informative material.

The opening hours of the information stand will be Monday through Saturday from 10-14 hours and 17-20 hours and Sunday 10 to 14 hours.

This week, aimed at raising awareness, protection and enhancement of the ecological, landscape and cultural heritage of the Huerta de Murcia, is open to the participation of all the neighbors, and with the active involvement of different social groups in the municipality , associations, schools, cultural, folk and institutions linked to the Huerta groups.
