A thesis from the University of Murcia shows that it is possible to remove tumors of the parotid gland without aesthetic consequences (17/02/2016)

A doctoral thesis at the University of Murcia by Antonio Javier Gómez Poveda, physician of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Hospital Reina Sofía, has demonstrated that it is possible to remove benign tumors of the parotid gland without leaving aesthetic sequelae and with less risk.

The benign parotid tumor, as stated in the study, which has obtained excellent cum laude, affecting 350 patients every year, of which 46 are registered in the region of Murcia, the same being associated with consumption snuff, radiation, fatty foods or human papilloma virus.

The dissertation advises early intervention with surgery that is collected in the same and is less aggressive than usual.

With that early intervention, it indicated in the research, the excessive growth of the tumor and its possible malignancy, which would require an extended surgery with the risk of facial sagging or nerve damage difficult to solve in such a visible part of the anatomy prevents it is the face.

According to the thesis, these tumors can be attacked with a minimally invasive surgery and a margin of safety, such as extracapsular lumpectomy, which involves less risk and a higher quality of life for the patient.

The usual treatment involves the removal of almost all of the parotid gland.

This scientific work was led by researchers at the University of Murcia Francisco Martinez Diaz and Alfonso Sánchez Aliaga, section chief of Pathology and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the same hospital.
