Three vets UMU in the team that will travel to Lebanon to try to improve livestock (15/02/2016)

Since 2009 various faculties of Veterinary Spanish have worked bilaterally with the Armed Forces.

To regulate this cooperation, the Conference of Deans of the Faculties of Veterinary Medicine Spain, (chaired by José Antonio Rouco Yanez, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Murcia), signed on 21 September 2015 an agreement with the Ministry of Defence.

The agreement stresses that this longstanding partnership has allowed reconcile university activity and interest to the fulfillment of the mission of the Armed Forces, as the realization of academic activities and veterinary research in areas of operations promotes cooperation civilians, organizations and agencies, and is in the best fulfillment of the mission of the Armed Forces in operations outside Spain.

The first action related to this agreement will begin on February 21 and will run until March 1.

A total of five teachers from three faculties of Veterinary: Murcia (3 teachers) and Complutense de Madrid and CEU-Cardenal Herrera of Valencia (1 teacher each), will travel to the area of ​​operations in Lebanon, where our armed forces in response to the mandate of the UN.

The functions that will develop veterinary support for the Lebanese civilians, mainly livestock sanitation, clinic livestock in the area, improving livestock and training to farmers for these stocks.

This is an eminently livestock and quite depressed area, which becomes especially important this collaboration, which will result in improved livestock production and, therefore, the standard of living of the population.

Veterinarians will form two teams of work, escorted by the Civil Guard (it is a conflict zone, near the border with Israel), through the villages, where they are greeted by the mayor indicating herds in to perform work.

Experience shows that people accept this collaboration with great pleasure, to the extent that has totally changed the perception people have of the presence of Spanish there.

According to the controls of the Spanish Army, this action has become for the Lebanese in the most important of all those held in the area.

This initiative is possible thanks to the collaboration of: General Council of Veterinary of Spain, the College of Veterinarians of Madrid, the College of Veterinarians of Murcia and Academy of Veterinary Murcia and companies: Boehringer Ingelheim, Bayer, Ecuphar , Fatro, Invesa, INTEGA, Nuserga, Virbac and Zoetis.
