Overweight children have more problems with aggression and depression, according to a doctoral thesis at the University of Murcia (15/02/2016)

The overweight child usually has more problems with aggression, hyperactivity and depression, according to the conclusions of the doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Murcia by Julia Madrid Garrido.

The study shows that excess weight "causes, in turn, personal and social problems that can, in a vicious circle adjustment aggravate the problem of obesity affected by resorting to emotional eating as a comfort, plus it often leads an early stigmatization of children in the social environment. "

For the realization of this thesis, the author analyzed a sample of 123 children aged between four and seven years, with and without obesity, belonging to different schools in Cartagena.

Findings also suggest that parents of overweight children indicate that these suffer major problems in adaptive skills.

The dissertation was directed by professors Ana Vanesa Valero, Maria Dolores Hidalgo and Marina Llanos Olmos.
