The Murcia en Bici association celebrates its XIV Bike Week within the framework of the Week (21/09/2020)

The Murcia en Bici association celebrates its XIV Bike Week within the framework of the European Mobility Week.

A week in which the Directorate General for the Environment of the European Commission has been encouraging municipalities and cities to raise awareness of activities for years to make citizens aware of the use of environmentally friendly modes of travel.

The slogan proposed for this year is "For mobility without emissions." Therefore, it is time to look at our city and see the data that the values ??of the air quality measurement stations show.

Things are not looking good at all, as the latest report by Ecologist in Action warns that 85% of the population in the Murcia region breathed polluted air and places Murcia and Cartagena as the most polluted cities. When we look at mobility policies, we are faced with a display of media and slogans that sell Murcia as a clean, low-emission city to be presented in external forums and try to convince the Murcian.

Although in terms of bicycle, infrastructures have been built during 2018, corresponding to announcements promised in 2010, the pending actions of the Bicycle Action Plan 2017 - 2019 have not been carried out.

It is even embarrassing that during the month In June at meetings of the Bicycle Observatory, the crash plan to promote the use of bicycles due to COVID-19 will be raised, referring to what remained to be done from the aforementioned plan.

To this day, we have no news of the evolution of that crash plan that was announced for the de-escalation,with urgent measures because the bike is a recommended means of transport for physical distancing.

Of course, the advertising device does work.

See the news where it was published that the seven sections would be available from next fall.

It is not surprising that the recent OCU report, which analyzed mobility in the ten large cities of the country, places Murcia as one of the cities with the lowest ratio of cycle lanes.places Murcia as one of the cities with the lowest ratio of bike lanes.places Murcia as one of the cities with the lowest ratio of cycle lanes.Meanwhile, actions such as preparing lanes by removing space from the car, widening sidewalks, making neighborhoods more friendly at low cost we see in other cities such as Logroño and Valencia.

They are an example of cities that, in a few months and at low cost, have made that "change of era"; Alluding to the words that our mayor Ballesta mentioned last June due to the pandemic situation.

Unfortunately, we are not witnessing these changes and resilient processes in our city and municipality. For all the aforementioned, and finding a deficit public transport, a public road dominated by the private motor vehicle, a return to school with police presence to direct motorized traffic without sustainable school mobility plans, neighborhoods and municipalities with hardly any pedestrian space For times that require more space in the face of social distancing, from the Murcia en Bici association we declare the state of the circulation of vehicles through the municipality and the city as unsustainable.

We know that the current situation due to COVID-19 means that we have to reduce events and acts to minimize risks.

Thus, the events for Bike Week are limited to two outdoor workshops in collaboration with Foodtopia El Carmen.

We will end the Bike Week on Tuesday September 22, European Car Free Day,with a bike ride along the axes marked in "Plan COVID" and that have not been executed.

For more information about the activities and details of limitation of participants and registration visit the website and our social networks. This year our awards have not been announced, but we announce the 2020 Pinchazo Award for the Department of (In) Sustainable Mobility and Youth of the Murcia City Council for its zero bike executions in its year and a half of mandate.

Ring Ring Award for every citizen who becomes a superhero and heroine when traveling through an unsustainable city and has left the private car for other means such as bike, scooter, walking or public transport.

!! Congratulations!! Despite everything, we encourage these and many more to join these modes of displacement to tackle the other climate change pandemic.

Let there be physical but not social distancing in these difficult times.
