The 'Espapila' campaign allows to increase the recycling of batteries in the municipality by 38% (17/08/2019)

The campaign 'Espapila' launched last summer by the City of Murcia and Ferrovial Services, has achieved that Murcia recycle 1,205 kilograms of batteries per month on average, representing an increase of 38% compared to 2018, when the monthly average was of 874 kilograms.

The Councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca Pérez, explained that "with this initiative we have promoted the collection of these special waste for proper recycling, demonstrating, in addition that awareness campaigns have an effect on Murcian society."

Currently 500 special containers are distributed throughout the municipality for the proper deposit of batteries, in schools, health centers, municipal offices, shops ...

Last summer, under the motto 'Espapila!', A campaign to raise awareness of the recycling of batteries and batteries was launched, seeking the complicity of neighbors and consumers in the recycling of these elements, so present in many household appliances.

The campaign has since toured the municipality of Murcia and has had a special presence during this school year in the lectures given to students in 4th and 5th grade, reaching this message to almost 10,000 students.

The objective has been to promote among them the correct practice of depositing this small waste but with serious consequences if it is not done well.

Students understand the message and also become a spokesperson at home for this simple gesture.

Thus, cardboard boxes were distributed among the students that were assembled like a puzzle and imitate the packaging of a medicine.

With this simple gesture, pollution to the environment is avoided and new raw materials are obtained for the manufacture of new products.

90.8% of the participants of the last survey on the evaluation of the road cleaning and waste service carried out between March and April indicated that they find it convenient to take the batteries to a place where they are collected.

Of these, more than 34% replied that they deposit them in stores and shopping centers, almost 25% take them to the Ecopoints, 21% deposit them at collection points near their home, 11% take them to public centers (Library, schools, health center), and 7.7% in their work.

The campaign is still open for those businesses or centers that want to collaborate.

For the request for the installation of a specific container for used batteries, the following steps must be followed:

1. The request is made to the Road Cleaning Service under the City of Murcia via email mariajesus.marin@ayto-murcia.es

2. Upon approval, the container is delivered to the establishment or center that requested it.

This container must be placed in a place visible and accessible to the public for the deposit of batteries.

3. Once the container is full, you must contact the concessionaire of cleaning and waste management company, Cespa Servicios Urbanos de Murcia by phone 900511133 or through the Murcia sustainable city web

5. Received notification, the zone foreman will collect the contents of them.

They will also check the condition of the container and its stickers, to also take care of its maintenance.

6. The batteries are deposited once collected in the Ecoparque de Murcia located in Calle Escultor Roque López del Polígono Industrial Oeste

7. Authorized Managers are responsible for the subsequent treatment and recycling of this waste.

Mobile Ecopoints are also recipients of this type of waste.

Subsequently, the batteries are transported to the Murcia Ecopark in San Ginés, where the batteries are separated according to composition and stored according to regulations.

Periodically, the Authorized Manager makes the collection for the transfer to these waste treatment centers.

The recycling of the batteries consists in the recovery of the metals in them contained for their reintegration into the market as raw materials.

Up to 75% of the battery and battery components are reusable.

In addition, the metals they contain can be recovered, on average 60% of the weight of the battery.

Once cataloged, the corresponding recycling begins, mainly aimed at recovering the metals.

The first operation is the separation of batteries with a high content of mercury and cadmium, while the other salt and alkaline batteries are crushed to separate their metal case from the rest.

Once milled and separated its metallic content (especially steel that is sent to iron and steel consuming industries), the remaining product is treated in a high temperature metallurgical process.

Thanks to this system, more than 75% of its components (such as zinc and other metals) are reused, which are reintroduced as raw material in various production processes.

Thus, increasingly scarce and more valuable raw materials are reintroduced into the production cycle, natural and energy resources are saved and potential impacts on the environment are minimized.
