The Traffic Control Center of the City of Murcia performs more than 68,000 actions a year to ensure a fluid, safe and sustainable mobility (16/08/2019)

The Councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca Pérez, has made this morning a balance of the actions carried out by the Traffic Control Center.

These facilities, which were launched in 1984, "have a privileged vision to control city traffic and manage the variables that affect mobility and are essential to develop our sustainable mobility project in the municipality," has Perez explained.

The CCT is operational from 8 to 22 hours continuously from Monday to Friday and from 12:30 to 14:30 and from 17:00 to 21:30 on Saturdays.

The Center has different systems for acquiring traffic information: 81 cameras distributed by the municipality, in the control room images of 71 motorized cameras are received to monitor the state of traffic, and another 10 fixed ones installed in the tunnels of Watchtowers (6) and Plaza de Castilla (4).

Also of 319 measuring points or turns that allow to know the intensity of the traffic in real time, in addition to the incidents transferred by Local Police and the citizens themselves.

Thanks to the centralization and monitoring of 243 traffic light regulations in the municipality, from the room itself the 'a la carte' traffic is regulated with their direct control to achieve maximum traffic flow.

The Traffic Control Center is attended by different operators: traffic, access and room.

The traffic operator is responsible for carrying out traffic management (cycle changes, deferred orders, deals, macros, communication with Local Police ...) and to control any breakdown that may occur in street equipment and that may impair good traffic management and notify the maintenance service.

For its part, the access control operator attends the access restriction service, controls the status of the bollards according to their schedule, attends to the users and special services and notifies the maintenance service of any breakdown.

It also handles the Public Information Management service and the modification of the messages of the panels according to the real needs.

The room operator is in charge of maintaining and updating the Databases, obtaining the capacity data, managing and controlling the tram preference system and controlling and managing the SOS tunnels and posts.

The Traffic Control Center is responsible for studying the distribution of time based on current traffic demands, works, creation of new roads ...

Likewise, the possible improvements in the different crossings of the city are analyzed, presenting the appropriate proposals and simulating traffic plans, predicting the behavior of the traffic lights and finding possible improvements.

Another of his work is the study of synchronisms (Green Waves) and documentation of them and gauging with the completion of the corresponding report.

Green Waves are the opening gaps between successive crossings so that vehicles concatenate the greatest number of crossings, at the desired speed, with green traffic lights.

This allows higher traffic volumes and reduces noise and energy consumption because less use of the brakes and accelerator is required.

For the calculation of these Green Waves two criteria can be prioritized:

1- Reduction of travel times and stops

2- Increase of Green strip

What is attempted is that the number of vehicle stops is as low as possible.

When a vial has a greater intensity of vehicles than it can absorb, it is decided to increase the green strip so that the largest number of vehicles is exited even if they make a greater number of stops.

Thus, since 2010 in the Traffic Control Room 24 road axes have been studied: Juan de Borbón, Primo de Rivera - Ronda Norte, Lieutenant Flomesta, Circular Plaza, Los Dolores variant, Correos street, Prince of Asturias, San Antón , Avda. La Fama, Miguel Induráin, Miguel de Cervantes, Antonete Gálvez, Ctra. Alicante, Shopping Centers, Torre de Romo, Kingdom of Murcia, Floridablanca, San Juan de la Cruz, May Day-Round of Levante, Pío Baroja - Ronda de Garay, Ctra. El Palmar, Juan Carlos I, Painter Sobejano and Avda. Los Pinos.

Thanks to this study and the actions carried out, a reduction of 676 "(11.3 minutes) of travel times has been achieved in all the roads, which means a total reduction of 38.6%.

Likewise, the stops on these routes have been reduced by 23 which translates into a reduction of 42.6%.

In addition, the design has recently been carried out to implement the Green Waves from Juan de Borbón Avenue, at the height of the shopping centers, to the Montepinar urbanization, and from the Mediamarkt roundabout in Ronda Sur to the El Rollo crossing, with reason for the underground works.

The extension of this green wave synchronization system is already under study for the implementation in more roads of the municipality, including coastal sections.

In the last year, more than 68,000 actions have been carried out from the Traffic Control Center, a daily average of 220;

120 corresponding to forgers (regulation changes at a specific intersection when traffic jams are registered), to which we would have to add another 100 actions corresponding to cycle changes that affect areas of crossings that go on to expand or reduce traffic light cycles depending on if there is little traffic and what is intended to increase is the rotation to decrease waiting times or if, on the contrary, there are traffic increases to increase the capacity to allow the entry or exit of flows at rush hour.

Soon 50 new cameras will be installed in 15 intersections of the municipality that will facilitate the collection of information and the most efficient traffic management within the 'Murcia Smart City' Project
