The PSOE urges the City Council to develop a catalog of traces of Franco in Murcia to eliminate them (29/07/2019)

"In what democracy do military streets that participated in crimes against humanity have streets in their honor? There are in our municipality," Teresa Franco, socialist councilor.

The Socialist Municipal Group presents a motion proposing the constitution of a Technical-Political Commission that develops a catalog of Franco's vestiges to proceed with the change of name of streets, revocation of honors and removal of monuments.

Twelve years ago, Law 52/2007 on Historical Memory came into force, which calls for measures to be established in favor of those who suffered persecution or violence during the civil war and dictatorship.

We must advance in compliance with this law and that in our municipality, the victims, the right to family and personal memory is respected.

For this reason, the Municipal Socialist Group presents a motion to the next Plenary Session of the City of Murcia in which it urges the Ballesta Government team to enforce this law.

To this end, he proposes the creation of a Technical-Political Commission that develops a catalog of the remains of Franco in the Municipality of Murcia.

"What we are demanding is not only justice, but mandatory. We cannot wait another twelve years to enforce the law. The public space of a democratic society cannot house symbols or public recognition of a dictatorial regime and those who repressed the freedoms for four decades, "demands the Socialist mayor, who also recalled that it is up to the public authorities to take appropriate measures for the" withdrawal of shields, badges, plaques and other objects or commemorative mentions of exaltation of the military uprising, of the Civil War and the repression of the dictatorship ".

"From the Municipal Socialist Group we believe that preparing this catalog is the first necessary step to have a real knowledge of the amount of Franco's elements that our municipality houses and thus be able to start working to replace or eliminate them," explains Franco.

"If we all believe in democratic values, having Franco's vestiges in our neighborhoods, streets and doors of the house is inadmissible. In what democracy do military streets have in their honor that participated in crimes against humanity? There are in our municipality," Teresa Franco concludes.
