The City Council approves the landscape protection plan of ´Las Fortalezas del Rey Lobo´ (26/07/2019)

The Governing Board has approved the landscape protection plan of the strategic project of 'The Strengths of the King Wolf' in which the conservation and use measures of the environment of the Historic Site of Cabezo de Torres and Monteagudo are established.

In this way, a list of the values to be preserved and of all the assets to be protected, their conservation measures, determine the appropriate uses of the goods and the proposals for intervention in a total area of 1,655,045 square meters is established.

Thus, the purpose of this plan is the management and protection of historical sites, historical sites, archaeological zones and areas declared of Cultural Interest and landscape protection.

As a Special Protection Plan, the historical and archaeological research will indicate the areas where the presence of remains is presumed, the limits of the historic center, the evolution of urban planning and the relationship of assets of historical, architectural, natural or social interest, with its conservation guidelines, intervention or evolution possibilities.

For its part, environmental and landscape studies will highlight the most interesting areas, the distorting elements, as well as the most susceptible elements of protection, all aimed at a global conception of the monumental complex, of the urban centers and of the surrounding garden.

The Cabezo de Torres y Monteagudo Historic Site is an environment with multiple buildings corresponding to Muslim fortifications and other places of cultural interest whose common link is the garden that surrounds them, creating a very special and characteristic landscape set.

Monteagudo Castle is the most emblematic monument in the area, due to its historical relevance.

Its location, at the top of a promontory, turns its walls of tapial into a landscape landmark, dominating the garden that extends to its feet.

On its slope is the population of Monteagudo.

In its vicinity, in the northwest direction, is the Castillejo de Monteagudo, former Arab recreation palace and center of a vast almunia.

Larache Castle, a fortification devoid of towers erected on top of a small nearby hill, has several houses and an oil mill nearby

In the hill known as Cabezo de Abajo, are the remains of the castle of Cabezo de Torres.

The area is very humanized and degraded, since houses annexed to its walls were built so it is very difficult to follow its footprint, although some traces of its structure are still visible.

The parish church of San Cayetano, in the urban center of Monteagudo, has Iberian, Roman and Muslim remains nearby.

The exploitation of the garden and its maintenance generate a series of infrastructures that cover the area and unite the different elements previously contemplated:

- The Caracol, Churra la Vieja and Zaraiche ditches run through the area from west to east, and with their armbands they create a vast irrigation network that extends throughout the area.

- Larache Pool and Cisterna del Castillejo.

- The Armero Mill.

To protect, revitalize and value the Historic Site of Monteagudo and Cabezo de Torres, it is necessary to plan a series of actions:

- Introduce revitalization measures.

- Establish land reserves to correct existing gaps, and / or provide necessary space for the development of heritage uses.

- Correct the discordant elements.

- Precise procedures so that Monteagudo Castle, Larache Castle, Castillejo and Cabezo de Torres Castle pass to the municipal or autonomous heritage.

- Obtaining the land located in the General Systems.

- Urgent consolidation intervention of Monteagudo Castle.

- Urgent intervention for cleaning vegetation and debris in cataloged goods.

- Definition of access to the previous enclosures, under adequate security and accessibility conditions, adaptation and improvement project.

This Special Landscape Protection Plan proposes several actions, the initial interventions being the following:

1. Application of urgent measures for the protection and conservation of cataloged assets: Almazara de Larache: consolidation actions;

Urgent program of excavation and documentation of the archaeological funerary contexts located on the southern slope of the Monteagudo hill, Larache Aqueduct and consolidation of walls and archaeological structures on the slopes of the Monteagudo hill.

2. Cleaning of the areas used as landfills and the removal of dry vegetation to facilitate the regeneration of the plant mantle in the natural area of the slope of the Cabezo de Abajo, the slopes of the hill where the Monteagudo Castle sits, especially in the itinerary to the castle that starts from San Cayetano, as well as its adequate conditioning.

3. Burying of overhead power lines, especially in Castillejo.

4. Urban adaptation of urban centers.

With the agreement of the Governing Board, the submission of the advance to public information, the presentation of the initial strategic document and the request for the initiation of an ordinary strategic environmental assessment procedure before the General Directorate of the Environment of the Special Landscape Protection Plan Site are submitted Historic Cabezo de Torres and Monteagudo.

The strengths of the Wolf King

This Special Landscape Protection Plan is necessary for the development of the project 'The strengths of the Wolf King' that will turn Murcia into a national reference of Medieval Spain as it is a historical, archaeological, environmental, educational and tourist project.

It is a unique environment, located in the heart of the Huerta de Murcia, which will become a large archaeological park in Monteagudo and Cabezo de Torres with a pioneering archaeological research center, with planting of various plant species to recover these monuments of the 12th century , creating a unique historical itinerary.

Thanks to this project, more than 150 archaeological sites will be recovered, in 4 monuments declared of Cultural Interest, such as Monteagudo Castle, Castillejo, Larache Castle and Cabezo de Torres Castle.

It should be remembered that among the actions already carried out is the acquisition of Castillejo de Monteagudo, the agreement between the three administrations (State, Community and City Council) for the development and management of all this work, work is being done on the acquisition of the land of the slope of the Castle that will be a great green zone and the Ministry has already awarded Phase I of restoration of the Castle of Monteagudo.

Declared of Cultural Interest with category of Historic Site, the environment of Monteagudo and Cabezo de Torres has been the place of settlement of numerous civilizations since prehistory.

It was one of the most influential sites in the entire Spanish east for centuries, the place of residence of Alfonso X the Wise and Ibn Mardanís, King Wolf.
