The City Council reviews the specimens of pine and eucalyptus to apply endotherapy treatments (25/07/2019)

Within the plan of innovation and constant improvement of the green areas of the municipality of Murcia, the Department of Modernization of Urban Administration and Development has begun to review the specimens of pines and eucalyptus of the municipality to know in which you have to apply endotherapy treatments to improve the health of the specimen against possible pests.

For this, more than 200 copies of pine from the municipality will be inspected visually, specifically the species of 'Pinus pinea' and 'Pinus halepensis' that are usually the most affected, as well as large eucalyptus.

"What is done is to detect which specimens have been able to have processionary caterpillars (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) in past seasons and make a small incision that injects a substance that absorbs the specimen and manages to eliminate the appearance of caterpillars that the tree may have," he explains. the Councilor for Modernization and Urban Development, José Guillén.

This technique is complemented by the placement of small plugs in those holes made in the tree so that it is fully protected and that in no case is damage to the specimen.

In addition, Guillen recalls, it is a method that is not harmful to the environment, avoiding aerial spraying and the possible inconvenience that this entails.

Endotherapy was also applied last year to eucalyptus in the municipality of Murcia to prevent the proliferation of another type of pest, obtaining very good results.

The endotherapy works are planned within the calendar of actions that are carried out from the Parks and Gardens Service of Murcia, as is the case with pruning and fumigation calendars of pines and palm trees.

The application of this technique has a proven efficiency superior to that applied by the spray and shower system of the specimens, since the durability of the product within the tree is estimated at about 2 years in the case of the processionary.
