More than 130 years old

The Department of Sports and Health of the City of Murcia manages the Municipal Cemetery, installation with more than 130 years old, and works on the project of transforming this installation into a good of cultural interest, incorporating into the city the wealth it contains and that conforms its history during these last two centuries.

In this sense, one of the last actions carried out has been the accession of the Municipal Cemetery Our Father Jesus to the Association of Significant Cemeteries of Europe (ASCE), composed of 140 members from 99 cities in 22 European countries.

Likewise, the City Council maintains its collaboration agreement with the Murcian Anthropology Society, in force since 2017, to develop actions that publicize the ins and outs of the main Murcia graveyard.

This agreement is intended to enhance the value of the cemetery, being a subject of study and protection and developing guides, conducting guided tours and launching a web page.

With this initiative, the City Council wants to boost knowledge about the past that houses this cemetery, as well as activities and informative publications that encourage the analysis of its cultural history, highlighting illustrious characters whose remains are deposited there.

This cemetery is one of the 34 that exist in the municipality, it is the largest and the only one with municipal ownership.

Our Father Jesus, located in the hamlet of El Puntal (although popularly known as the 'Espinardo Cemetery'), currently hosts 166,000 inhumated people.
